| One of my fellow researchers had trouble along this line. The RCX just refused to take the firmware. I did hear somewhere that florescent lights interfere with the IR. | (...) The wierd thing about the bytecodes provided by lego for direct serial communication (used by SendSerial() etc.) is that they are Tx only - there aren't any corresponding Rx capabilities. | Dan, I had the same problem with a newly purchased RCX - turned out to be the tower. I rang Lego support, they did some trouble-shooting and finally told me to take it back and get a replacement.
