Amazing lego set. I cant see myself buying it, but really look forward to

This set is completely beautiful!!!! Remember LEGO Ambassador Steve Sanders
announcement? Check out
this drawing.
It says this modular building project will launch in April and there will be
more detail in the March BrickJournal.

Wow indeed. I never thought I'd see an official set like that. It's
perhaps a touch overdone - too many colours/details in a relatively
small space - but still, wow!
With these 2007 sets you are spoiling us, ambassa... er, LEGO. I have
vowed not to buy any more LEGO until I've built a lot more of the things
I have bricks for, but with sets like this and the bulldozer my resolve
is weakening...

Price. I cant see the day where I would spend more than $40-$50 (if even that)
on a set any more. Not that I disagree with you or feel it is not worth
whatever the price will be. I just dont spend that kind of money on sets. Id
rather go to Bricklink or PAB and get exactly what I need.
The drawback to this approach, for me, is not seeing the building instructions
and learning potential new building techniques.
Again, to be very clear: It is not because I dont think it is worth the money
or an incredible set. I am very happy to see it as a set and everything that it
stands for with regards to the community and experienced builder. I am not
intending to come across negatively in anyway with regards to this set.
It is awesome.

Ahh, ok. I thought it might be either the price tag or the bley issue, but just
checking.
For myself, Ive found buying sets to be kinda helpful insofar as it exposes me
to new pieces and increases my collections potential. Kind of like when I
suddenly needed hundreds of this piece:
. Its not something I ever
would have thought to buy (certainly not in quantity), but it was kind of like
magic suddenly realizing that I had about 200 of them, because I happened to
have bought sets that had them. Of course, it does mean obviously that I get
bunches of pieces I never use, but still-- Im often suprised at what I end up
using!

Totally agreed. Hence my mention on the instructions. One of my goals is to
keep my stock of bricks waiting to be used as low as possible too. It gets
frustrating at times, not having exactly what I need at my finger tips, but it
works for me.

This is a lovely model, Im curious as to how much play value it has - or if
its more just for looks.

appeal to adults more than kids. (Not that Im complaining... *grin*)

I think one of the other appeals will be to the albeit small female market. The
few women Ive known who have talked about liking Lego as children often
reflected on how they liked the less action-packed sets (like police stations

How awesome would it be to see sets in this genre coming out more frequently? A

I have to agree with you John, about the pricing situation. For that money you
can get quite a haul at Bricklink.
What I dont like about the model is the windows. Granted the arches over them
on the 2nd and 3rd floor give it a nice Victorian look, but what is with mixing
bley first floor windows with white ones above? And what are those windows made
from on the 2nd floor (below the arched castle windows)?
Mercifully this set doesnt include the use of antennas and clear bricks to make
windows.
TLG really does need to come out with some new windows. Good lord the toy of
the century doesnt even have a selection of windows that actually match each
other.
Back in 1963 TEN PERCENT of all the different LEGO elements were WINDOWS!!!
Today it is less than 1/100th of 1% !!!

Im pretty much in the same boat as Brendan. I havent purchased a set since
probably January 2004, but the sets that are coming out this year are really
impressive.
Personally I dont like this set for what it is as Ive never really had a thing
for euro architecture, but I do think it has potential. I see this set as an
opportunity to learn something during the build but more importantly the parts
selection is what really sells me on this. I can easily see myself using parts
from this one set in 2 or 3 American style buildings and the building techniques
in several more.
This set could also be an excellent choice for an alternate model competition at
a community event like Brickworld. Builders would make a MOC using the parts
from this one set with the winner getting a copy of the set as a prize. It could
lead to some really cool models, which TLC could post instructions for. Anyway
its an idea.

Incredible set! Amazingly beautiful! The builders at TLC prove to have the chops
when they want to really show what they can do! (And these guys have been
sneaking Brickshelf, which is always a good thing.) One of the best sets ever
done by TLC -- if not the best -- I say!
For me, and given that Ive always dreamed of LEGO producing minifig scale
houses, it is hard to believe this has finnaly come true.
Oh my..., I said it before and Ill say it again, its a great time to be an
AFOL. And all things considered, I reckon it is the indeed best time. And by the
looks of it, 2007 seems to be deemed to be the best year in LEGOs history.
I really hope this set conquers the sales TLC expects from it so they can keep
producing these true masterpieces. By the looks of it, Millenium Falcon is
selling big time and it only can be a good thing, both to TLC and to us.
For my part I think I cant resiste but to buy two of them. At least!
Congrats and thanks, LEGO!
Now excuse me, Ill have to go looking for an extra job...
Still amazed,

So I finally got my hands on a cafe corner the other day, which I have to add is
only my 3rd post color change set purchase and I sat down a built it yesterday.
Upon opening the uber cool new recloseable box the WOW factor really hit me.
This set is literally an AFOLs dream. There are tons of parts in useable sizes
quantities and colors. I was very impressed. I sorted the bags and began
drooling over the dark blue brick, which was seemingly included just for AFOL
enjoyment.
So I started building it swapping every dark blue brick I could for tan and
4hrs later I had the finished model sitting in front of me minus all but 12 dark
blue parts. So I sat the model in front of me and took it all in. all in all I
really have to say its an awesome build but there were several things that just
really bugged me.
During the second floor build I was surprised to find that for 7 bricks in
height the inner and outer walls had no connections to each other. This was
really a pain as I had a hard time keeping it together during assembly however
once assembled it is plenty strong. My only other gripe is the 3 holes left by
the inner support structure that all of the turntables are connected too. These
holes really detract from the model and I just couldnt take it. I fixed the top
one by covering it with a 1x4 tan plate but the others however, were not so
easy. I tried finding simple fixes and although a 1x2 reddish brown panel would
have fixed the second floor hole, I decided to modify my set quite a bit so it
flowed better all the while eliminating the holes as well.

I think youve made some nice adjustments and added some thoughful additional
touches. I like the inclusion of the awning over the angled door. I thought
that was missing in the original.
For me, I really like the set and am very happy I bought it. But, while
building it, I discovered (re-discovered, actually) that I dont get much
pleasure in building lego models. It has some great techniques and I learned a
few new things, but really didnt enjoy the time spent. The joy for me is
building my own stuff. I was initially planning on building it and shelving it
for display, but I ended up taking it apart after 1 day so I could use the parts
in my own creations.
If there is another similer building from Lego down the road, Ill certainly buy
it and probably build it as well. But, building my own stuff is where I get my
enjoyment.

however once assembled it is plenty strong. My only other gripe is the 3
holes left by the inner support structure that all of the turntables are
connected too. These holes really detract from the model and I just couldnt
take it. I fixed the top one by covering it with a 1x4 tan plate but the
others however, were not so easy. I tried finding simple fixes and although
a 1x2 reddish brown panel would have fixed the second floor hole, I decided
to modify my set quite a bit so it flowed better all the while eliminating
the holes as well.
you can see the solution i came up with here:

I think youve made some nice adjustments and added some thoughful additional
touches. I like the inclusion of the awning over the angled door. I
thought that was missing in the original.

Thank you. And me too, thats why I added the awning. It was a pain in the butt
to do though as the geometry in that area is tight. I ended up using headlight
bricks with 1x2 brick hinges snotted to make it work. Plate hinges just wouldnt
fit.

For me, I really like the set and am very happy I bought it. But, while
building it, I discovered (re-discovered, actually) that I dont get much
pleasure in building lego models. It has some great techniques and I learned
a few new things, but really didnt enjoy the time spent. The joy for me is
building my own stuff. I was initially planning on building it and shelving
it for display, but I ended up taking it apart after 1 day so I could use the
parts in my own creations.
If there is another similer building from Lego down the road, Ill certainly
buy it and probably build it as well.

Same here. If nothing else, its an awesome parts set. Im really hoping this
is the beginning of a long line similar sets. If I can find a deal on them Im
going to pick up several more copies..

But, building my own stuff is where I
get my enjoyment.

I totally agree. I build the sets to see if I learn anything then its parts or
modified, usually within hours. Building mocs has all ways been why i enjoy
this hobby so much. Theres no right or wrong and if you dont like it, it
doesnt cost you anything to build something else out of the parts. Besides why
should I limit myself to someone elses creativity? =)
