Ottawa LUG?

Is there anybody still in the Ottawa area who might want to get a LUG
together in the future?
We don't neccessarily have to have regular meetings or anything to start,
just maybe have whoever wants to get together and meet, just for the
sake of knowing there are other AFOL's around. I'm in Barrhaven myself.
I've recently moved into a townhome, and am still working on getting the
place painted/wallpapered/etc, so I haven't got to set up my meager LEGO
collection yet. I've been trying to collect 9V Trains, Town, and some
Pirates and Divers.
If anyone wanted to though, we could meet at a home, restaurant, or just
a LEGO carrying store like Playvalue or TRU some day.
Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

p.s. I don't regularly check this newsgroup, so if anyone wishes to
reply, email me at home @ heidi.strutt@sympatico.ca

I do believe that the Ottawa area already has an active and prosperous LUG
group!  The message below is from Tue, 27 Jun 2000 18:24:36 GMT:

I just want to ask all AFOL's and JRFOL's who are in the Ottawa area, if there
is any interest in starting an Ottawa Lego Users Group. Please reply if you are
interested along with what area you live in. Myself, I live in Blackburn, for
now... Oh yeah, I am interested in a group starting too. :-)
Let's see what kind of response we get and go from there.
Jude

Also, a post from Fri, 2 Jun 2000 19:23:16 GMT:

I decided to delurk a little while ago. My name is Jude and I am certain there
are other lurkers out there. Everybody in the NCR delurk and lets prove to the
Torontonians (sp?) that there is more to Ontario than their "MegaCity". Also I
think Todd Lehman will be happy that he gave us a group for more than our
petty 17 messages thus far.
Jude

Good work! form a collective, decide upon a name, create a web site, and talk
to Eric Kingsley about getting your region on the map! Perhaps, one day our
respective groups can have annual Ontario Lego Group gathering   :)
Together, we will own Ontario in the name of LEGO!
Richard

Well, I was working on assumptions………………………….
I said: "I do 'believe' that there was an Ottawa group," cause the first
planning and inception stage was soooooo long ago. And I was under the
impression that u had already composed an organization. Sorry if I jumped to
conclusions. It's just that there are lots of posts in the Ottawa group, and
it seamed as though everyone knew each other. Therefore, I deduced that an
organization existed in its infancy.

I'll stick to my day job and leave the detective stuff to Holmes.

Richard,

You are correct, I did try to get something going last year but in the end
it fell apart. Perhaps now the timing is better. Besides, the trips to LUG
meetings will be much shorter. :-)

I wish you all in the Ottawa region to be able to form your own group. That way
we should be able to do groups event with OttLUG, MonLUG, RTLToronto(?) at
least once a year.

We still have open position in MonLUG in case your not enough to create your
own group.

I think that would be great...I'm joining rtlToronto very shortly...and
a canadian lego convention or mass gathering...???  whatever you want to
call it would be very neat...we could meet possibly with Lego Corporate
and share some ideas and concerns...most of which they'll have heard anyways.
but at least our concerns will be flavoured for Canadians...eh??

I also think of a good name for the LUG in Ottawa...how about CAPLUG.

Sure, we could start with a MonLUG, rtlToronto, Ottawa meeting and then I
could get an rtlToronto membership for the hattrick. :-)

Actually, before we plan anything like that, give us a chance to meet and
see if we are going to start a LUG. Then we can plan to take over the world.

Don't forget, there is going to be a MonLUG meeting here in Ottawa this
summer. I still have to take my turn to host. :-) And considering how close
the cities are (~2hrs apart) it would not be unreasonable to plan to get
together, the cool thing is the meetings would be bilingual.

And if things don't work out here in Ottawa I can carpool. :-)

I was thinking about something with O-C in it, but I'm a
little fuzzy here..., doesn't O-C exclude most of the outlying
areas (Kanata, Nepean, Gloucester, etc)?

Kyle,

We are now one city, Ottawa, kinda like Toronto we are a Mega City. So those
outlying areas no longer exist because they are in our city limits. Speaking
of which, I need to order new cheques.

Yes, Ottawa now includes as far out as Stittsville I believe.
I've heard there are some very disappointed people out there that
had a nasty surprise when they got their tax bill from the new city.
I don't know about the stores closing at 5pm yet though (LOL), but
our new LUG (looks like it's ParLUGment) spent the evening at Playvalue
and Zellers until 9:30pm and rang up a measly total around $400 to start
our group off. Not bad, considering the guy with the smallest budget
spent the majority of the money eh guys? Haha.

Just go to PlayValue - the big toystore near Carling W bound and Kirkwood.
Prepare to be surprised, and don't miss the polybags hanging on the pillar.

The meeting went well.  Jude showed a few MOC, and we picked on Tim for over
spending and have to hide the big sets from his wife.

So far I have been spending a lot on ebay and brickbay on train sets I
missed out on (from my dark ages).  As well, I'm getting close to Star
Wars complete.

If you want any older Star Wars sets, they have several on sale at
Playvalue for a decent price. Several RIS expansion type sets too,
along with some Adventurer stuff and some small Town stuff.
I'll list off my purchases:
7171 Mos Espa Podrace - $69.99
6453 Com-Link Cruiser - $5.99
5920 Island Racer     - $3.99
5913 Dr. Kilroy's Car - $2.50
5313 Space Service Pack- $1.99 (got 5)
And then we hit Zeller's, and got a head-start on their 15% sale:
6494 Mystic Mountain Time Lab - $59.50
8250 Search Sub - $42.50
4285 Classic Value Bucket - $8.49

Once we get started though, Jude tells us that we can get some better
deals with group buying power. He's been telling us wonderful stories
from the Montreal LUG that he started attending.

BTW, I'm interested in Trains also. I have been trying to get some
of the harder to find 9V sets, ie 4558, 4551, 4564. So far I have
4525, 4532x2, 4533, 4537x5, 4539x2, 4541, 4544, 4546, 4549x2, 4552,
4553, 4559, 4561, 4563.
Are you collecting 9V or 12V, or both? I'd love to get some of the
12V stuff, but with limited resources, I'm just hoping for the 3
9V sets I listed. And do you have any of your own MOC's?

Anyways, we'd be more than glad to have another person join our LUG.
The more the merrier. Play well.

Hi,

If you want any older Star Wars sets, they have several on sale at
Playvalue for a decent price. Several RIS expansion type sets too,
along with some Adventurer stuff and some small Town stuff.
I'll list off my purchases:
7171 Mos Espa Podrace - $69.99
6453 Com-Link Cruiser - $5.99
5920 Island Racer     - $3.99
5913 Dr. Kilroy's Car - $2.50
5313 Space Service Pack- $1.99 (got 5)

I have been to play value a few times and picked some good older stuff,
as well as the droid developer kit and cyberslam (I think? - for the
cheap motor and beams).  Didn't see the deals you listed about though -
may have to check it out this week.  Anything left or did you guys clean
it out? :)

And then we hit Zeller's, and got a head-start on their 15% sale:
6494 Mystic Mountain Time Lab - $59.50
8250 Search Sub - $42.50

Wow!  Which Zellers was this?  I thought I had hit every Zellers in the
Ottawa area, and I have never seen these 2 sets.  Good find...

The best find I've had is an 8277 and multiple sets of 6444.

This sounds pretty good.  Right now I am collecting 9V first, but if any
cool train purchase opportunity arises on ebay, I will take it.  I had a
7710 and 7816 when I was a kid, and I am now working on the 9V line.  I
grabbed the 7816 when I was home at Christmas and left the 7710 and old
4.5 volt track set up in my parents basement for my niece to play with.
In any case they were still in great condition.

This is what I've managed to get so far in 9V:

2126
3225 - should be arriving in the next week from Brickbay
4532
4536 x2 - love this car.  Man I wish I had been into lego when this came
out in '91, I would have bought 10's of them!  Instead now they average
$50+ U.S.
4537
4555 Should be coming from Germany, but it is taking a long time -
hopefully it arrives soon.
4561
4563 Another sweet deal from Europe.

I am also looking for a 4558, but not yet.

In any case, I have a nice little layout in the corner of my living room
- enough so my girlfriend isn't too concerned :)  I am hoping to get a
digital camera soon so I can post some pictures of it and my MOCs.

Other than train stuff, I am getting close to Star Wars complete, just
missing a few of the bigger sets (Falcon, UCS TIE, maybe a couple
others).  I also enjoy the Adventurers sets - especially the planes.  I
really like the Pontoon Plane and Island Hopper.

LOL, no we didn't clean them out yet. They have quite a few of all the
sets left there still.

Wow!  Which Zellers was this?  I thought I had hit every Zellers in the

I think there may have been an 8250 left on the shelf. Kay-On had it in
his hands, but he'd already bought one previously, so he left it. It was
on the bottom shelf at the Zeller's at Baseline and Woodroffe.

The best find I've had is an 8277 and multiple sets of 6444.

Cool. I got a couple 6444's too, but I never found any 8277's. Where
did you find that one? Any left by chance?

As for Train stuff, I forgot about the 2126 and 3225 - I have one of
each of those also. Nice 7700 series train sets you listed too. I also
wish I'd been into Trains when their golden years were around. I am
still trying to get a hold of some 4536's, and made a replica in the
mean-time. Ihaven't got much in the way of MOC's yet, but hope to
remedy that soon. I'd be very interested in seeing your layout too.
I had one set up for a while in our apartment, namely around Christmas
time a year ago (going around the tree), but I haven't set up anything
yet since we moved into our townhome the end of November. Still just
unpacking and setting up/decorating.
Do you use the Track Designer program? I designed my layouts with it
and still have them on file.
TTYL. Play well.

What about 4547...the companion set for 4558....(Club Car)
I just got my 4558 this week and it is awesome!!!  I paid $230 plus
$40 for airmail to rush this to my place...and was very happy I did.
The 4547 should be coming soon, but it is coming from Australia....
I also like 4549...it looks pretty good.  I wish I could get this,
twice over!!
What about 4564 and 4565...I really like the engine in 6564 (another
set I got this week!!! Talk about very lucky!!!!)
I still need to get 4565 (I like the cranes and other accessories in this
set!!!)
What about 4559...I have one of these...this is a lovely "luxery" train.
What about any train stations (besides the freight loading station)??
I have the juniorized one (4556)

I am also in Ottawa, and just having come out of my dark ages in
November, I might be interested in joining the LUG.  How did it go last
night... find any good deals?

Just go to PlayValue - the big toystore near Carling W bound and Kirkwood.
Prepare to be surprised, and don't miss the polybags hanging on the pillar.

The meeting went well.  Jude showed a few MOC, and we picked on Tim for over
spending and have to hide the big sets from his wife.

It is good to see that there are others in the nieghbour hood that enjoy those
bricks.

I think Tim might be a bad influence though.  :)

That store sounds very interesting by the way, thanks for posting it.

I am having troubles finding 5928 Harry Canes Bi-plane in the Adventurers
series.  I think the other planes, cars and characters are just great!
PlayValue will be hearing from me.

Actually, I think it was me who influenced Tim. After all, I convinced him to
get the Pod Racer set and the camel and the sub...

Mind you, he is married and I am single and he should know better. :-)

With these "specials" they get it is the closest thing to an Outlet in the
Region.

Went to play value today, and was I surprised when I saw the piles and
piles of lego!  Got 1 each of the adventurers sets, hadn't seen them
before except on the shop@home web site!  Also I will have to go back
another day to pick up some of the other clearance items.  Tonnes of
great stuff. It must be new, as that wasn't in there about 3 weeks ago.
Now I see why you laughed when I asked if you cleaned them out... you
would need a forklift for all that stuff!

While I was there, 2 other people were there stocking up on a LOT of
lego... wasn't anyone from here was it?  I almost asked them if they
were in the Ottawa LUG, but then didn't bother.

Also I went to Zellers and picked up an 8250.  There is still one there
for whoever wants it...

Cool. I got a couple 6444's too, but I never found any 8277's. Where
did you find that one? Any left by chance?

I found the 8277 at a store in Bells Corners, but it was the only one.
The 6444's are at the Bay in Orleans.

Forgot to mention that the Bay across from Rideau Centre has the
7161/7121 combo pack, which is a great deal at 50% off.  On top of that
Bay has a 20% off sale, so the price is about $32 for the sub and
swamp!  There were a few left on the weekend, and they both have great
parts.

One left in stock as of 15 min ago.:-)  Also there is a stack of RIS 1.5 that
are $240 with the sale. Also they have *all* the Alpha team sets. The 20% off
is all LEGO.
