You are correct, they are hard to come by. So are 1x1 blue tiles. It took
me about three months of watching eBay and BrickBay to locate some 1x1 blue
tiles.

Yes those are hard to come by. And Mike is right, those 1x1 blue tiles are
very scarce. I didn't think I had any until I found 12 in an old box.
That got me to thinking about what pieces are rare. Yes there are rare slopes
and arches such as any corner slope in yellow (low, regular, steep), and the
half arches in red or yellow. But what about more common pieces? One item
that I found out was quite hard to come by was the WHITE classic 1x3x2 window.
This white window is hard enough to find, but the ones without the window sill
are really rare. I didn't have any in my collection of classic windows
(thousands), so a German collector friend sent me one of the 2 he had. Another
rare window is the 1x4x5 large window in yellow. Other rare items include 2x2
clear tiles, white 2x2 inside corner regular slopes, and gray 2x2x3 corner
steep slopes.
The list goes on and on.

BTW, 1x1 blue tiles aren't THAT hard to come by - I must have dozens (I need to
sort them out of all of my bulk, though, and they AREN'T for sale). StarHawk
II had quite a few from what I can remember.

Seen that Chevvy on the cover of the Ultimate LEGO book? It's got 1x4 clear
tiles on top of the windscreen. I'd love a few of those, but I guess they're
LEGO modelmaker only...

The only set that have a clear tile (2x2) is one of the camper van sets, most probably 6590. The other, older camper van
set 6694 has 2x2 clear plates which is also rare I think, at least not in any 1980+ sets.

Right. Notice that Selcuk said that 6694 has a 2x2 clear plate, and that it is
rare in 1980's sets, and I responded that the 6680 1980's era set also has a
clear plate. I understand that there is only one set with a clear tile.

There is a Town set, a house with a sloping yellow roof (I can't remember the
number). This might be a European only set, but I cannot verify that either. That
is the only set I can remember that even had yellow apex bricks, although a pirate
ship might have some 1/2 pyramid slopes in yellow.

I have a list of 1740 parts which are sole sourced (by the sets I've
inventoried, most of which are current sets).
Naturally, 99% are decorated or some unique color or shape.
The Red Clip-top Tile is a strange one though.
I only have it as being (2) in 6334 (Wave Jump Racers) - on special earlier
this year from S@H. (That's what you were looking for)

Looks like 6517 Water Jet (a complement to 6334) also had one. It is an odd
one (the rareness 1x1 red tile with top clip), that is for sure. Doesn't
really explain where I got the six I have though. Doesn't 5561 have any?
Hmm - apparently not, in the inventory
(http://news.lugnet.com/db/inv/?n=402) it doesn't show one.

I have two. After flipping through a dozen instruction books (I was sure
they were from a Ninja or UFO set), I've finally figured out that they
came from 4002 Riptide Racer. Definitely not a common part.

6456 Mission Control. (Who would have thought?)
Its 478 parts provide the most parts variety of any 'current' set.

This part can also be found in the following sets:

Most of these can still be found around in places. If you can get the Sea
