Hats off the to LD, I think this is a great move. Let's see now, there is a
castle legend set,a train legend set, and now we need a SPACE and TOWN legen

Definate possibility. That is too bad, I would have loved seeing either the
6399 or 6990 monorail come back. Those would have been ideal. Well, I hope
maybe they can pull our the straight monorail mold and maybe make a 10 pack
or something. Even the monrail carsbeds would be a plus.
Still a great announcement overall, I wonder what they will release in terms
of town / space.

Personally, I think of the Metroliner as being a town set. Sure it's a
train, but trains are a part of town, IMO. Otherwise, I think 6390 Main
Street would be a good candidate. (It even makes use of some SNOT building
techniques.) 6394 would also be cool.
As for space, I would like to see 497 Galaxy Explorer. I would have picked
something Blacktron (or the M-Tron stuff, which I like for some odd reason),
but the classic space stuff just seems more, uhm, "universal".

I think he means that if he were to build a town, it would have a train
station/line in it. I do not think he is saying that "Train" is part of
"Town". For a long time I have thought (and said) that Train needs to move
away from Town a little. I have suggested, in the past, that Lego should
consider an adventures train... or perhaps even a western or space one. I
suppose it could be argued that they have taken a tiny step that way with
the HP set. A tiny step.

You summarized what I was saying better than I could have.
As for the "tiny step" with HP, I actually feel it is a pretty large step.
At least now a train (no Larry, not a Train) will be available at almost all
retail locations.

I think the wording of my original post may be what you have an issue with.
I was careful not to capitalize 'town' or 'train', because I wasn't talking
about the Town line or the Train line. All I was saying is that while the
Metroliner is a train (and part of Train), it looks to me like it would be
part of a town (not the Town line, but just a town/city).
Similarly, if LEGO were to produce an Old West era train, (maybe they have,
I don't know), to me it would be part of the wild west. The train may be a
set in the Train line, but all I was originally saying is that it fits into
other lines as well.
In fact, I would be willing to go so far as to say that Train (the line) is
almost a supplement to other lines of LEGO sets. A futuristic train would
be part of Space (the monorail is often used in Space setups). An early
1900s era train could easilly be part of Adventurers. An 1800s train could
easilly be part of Western. Modern trains are easilly a part of Town.
I'm not saying that trains are any more or less
valuable/interesting/fun/whatever than other LEGO lines, but what would a
Train setup be without buildings, people, etc.?

But the original box was badged Trains not Town... The metroliner had grey
1x4s in it, does that make it Classic Space?
LEGO(r) set up different themes, LEGO decided how to organize them. LEGO
decided that Town and Trains were different themes. It's gotten all muddled
up of late, but the original theme organization made sense.

You are posting to lugnet.trains and not lugnet.townandtrains because the
people who set up the newsgroups modeled the theme organization quite
closely. Rightly so, IMHO.

Which is fine, but shows that you're a townie. I build townstuff as a
backdrop for trains rather than the other way round. The trains are the
players on *my* stage and the buildings are merely set decoration. To each

Good point. The 6691 Monorail Transport Base is Space/Unitron, and the 6399
Airport Shuttle is Town/Flight yet both are monorails - similar to trains
(i.e. bi-rails?).
I think the Lego Group should be consistant. The existing line of trains
ARE Town!

In fact I was reading the text of Stephan and was not sure, how to understand
it. If there was a joke, then I surely missed it. Getting a joke in a foreign
language is not too easy sometimes....
On the other hand I'm feeling always a little proud, when people think of me
being that active (and successful!) in making hoaxes. But it is right: I never
made a Lego hoax on another day than april the first.
Anyway: who is Stephen and why should I care about thing he writes? He has done
2 postings in lugnet.trains so far (AFAIK) and he seems to have a little

I guess I just get a little tired when some one posts "Is this for real?
Does this mean...etc, etc...", every damn time the TLG comes out with
something new. I thought it was painfully obvious that the new train cars
are "REAL". I don't know why people post "Is this true?" all of the time,
so I made a few jokes about "Ben" Benecke and his April fools joke.

That said, I also think that Mr.. Benecke's trains (MOC's) are much, much
better than some of these "new" train cars. The caboose is lame, and, I
mean, who can't whip together a 10013 Open Freight Wagon with a few spare

No need to apologize. I was reacting to your post with a little humor (some
would say very little). I think that it is best to handle a difference of
opinion and get a chuckle at the same time. There are others who see
something posted of which they don't approve and flame you. There are yet
others who wouldn't know a joke if it flew up their nose. Either way,
ignore them, maybe they will go away.
To each his own, and I hope you enjoy the "train scene".

But I agree, the 10013 looks a bit strange - none of the log cars I've seen
(in australia) has big end sections - they rely on the chains holding them.

This car is actully prototypical, the car would normally be used for
pulpwood, the logs being short, and stacked sideways. They'll sometimes
leave the chain out here stateside... But one thing i have to say, the ends
are backwards. The caboose on the other hand is only a great sorce for 1x1
handle bricks for my fire engines. With that said, i see Stephen's
frustration, when people ask if it is true it bothers me too, but the hacks
at Ben's april fool's joke are cheep. Anyways, I model 8-wide, so the new
trains are of no real use (but i'm getting a Metroliner...).
