| | | | | Hey everybody, I'm back after a long period of lurking. But not to worry,
I've brought a little something back with me.
The Tauros Military Outpost was my big project for our local fair, and it's
been almost a year since it was first started. So after much toiling away
taking pictures, building the web-pages, and then moving the entire site,
the Tauros Outpost is finally viewable in it's full glory.
I've finally moved my site to a new, more easily recognizable domain name.
So if you've got links people, change 'em now.
Okay, enough rambling. You can check out the Tauros Military Outpost in the
Structures section of the main page, located here:
http://www.ragnarok7.com/lego.html
I also changed my header pic on the main page, as well. The old one was
getting a little, well, old.
Let me know what you think.

the fair or just for show?

No, the project was for display only. I'm the head Lego judge in our Hobby
building at our fair, so I get some special privelages, like having my own
display case. The whole thing is explained in detail in this post:

| Wilson,
Way to make an entrance! The model is mind-blowing. I love the details, and
overall, it's just so perfect, it's scary. Good work, can't wait to see what

Hey Jason, thanks for the great feedback! It's really cool that you think
it's "perfect", when it's actually far from perfect when viewed from a
functional design standpoint. But I guess that was the angle I was going
for, so I'm glad you think the same.
As for what else I've got planned, I'm going to start laying out my project
for next year's fair. I'm planning on having it be the largest and most
intricate of my creations so far, so you can look forward to some teaser
pics and such from that as well.

Dang! Now, that's intricate! How long did it take
to complete this project? Must have taken quite a
lot of grey bricks!
Anyway, great job. I particularly like the layout
of the outpost itself, with the bridges and
mountainous background.

Well, I don't have an exact time period, but the timeline roughly explains
what happened at each point in time. But it took me about 6 months of on
and off working to complete it.

That's nice to hear, as the mountain-building was extremely tedious, but
necessary to achieve the kind of look I wanted.
Thanks for the comments.

How convenient that you return just after CW is getting back up! <grin>

Wow! That isn't just an outpost, it is an artform! I really like the
multi-tiered natural look that you developed. You have a lot of varied
detail too. Oh, and the timeline was great. It would be interesting to see
you use some of your older pics to show an "in-character" timeline where the
outpost is possibly built over a long time by different owners. That could
be interesting too...

Yeah, that is pretty convenient, although not planned. I've been in the
process of building the site pages for a couple months now (I'm extremely
lazy, if you couldn't tell already) but I just finally got everything lined
up the other day.

Hey, that's a good idea! I think I'll plan on doing something like that for
my next project. I could possibly still do it with the Outpost by taking
pictures of the different owners as I gradually un-built it. And then made
it into a little storylet (storylet?), yeah.
But anyway, thanks for the great feedback.

Way cool! I really like structures that make physical sense, and your outpost
does that. I'm glad to see all the cloaks about - given the seacost location,
and the "airyness" of the outpost, they'll need them.
Some of my favorite bits are the many paths going up and down and across.
I'd like to go there myself and explore in person. But, being a wimp, I'd
want all those nasty soldier-types to be somewhere else at the time. :-)

Yeah, I thought I had a lot of capes to begin with, but it turns out I had
to order about 20 more in order to outfit all my guys. I really like having
a bunch of guys (grunts) that look exactly the same, like an official army.
It's fun just to set 'em up and just. . . look at 'em. hehe :-) I don't
have as many guys as say, Jimmy Park, but it's still cool nonetheless.

I was thinking that same thing the whole time I was building it! "Man, I'd
just love to be a minifig right now and run around and look off the
balcony's and stuff!" I think it'd give me a better perspective on how big
it really is compared to standard minifig size.
Actually, it'd be a lot of fun to just be a minifig for a day or so, at say,
Brickfest or some event like that, where you could just run around and try
out all the people's creations. Wow! Hehe, and now I'm just rambling . . .
Thanks for the comments, Chris.

Wow Richard, thanks for the awesome comments! I really like the way the
adventures baseplate worked out. And I think it looks a lot better with the
sculpted sand bar things, than just square, like I had it before.
I'm glad you like the whole "ruggedness" aspect of it. It kind of makes you
look at it a little harder when you see it and can't pick out patterns and
such, and I think that's the reason it looks so detailed, because each
section has its own special structure.

| Wilson!
I saw this behemoth on Brickshelf, but didn't want to steal any thunder. It
is absolutely amazing. The fact that it actually looks like it was cut and
fashioned out of big chunks of rock is it's best feature. The totally
random and sporadic use of grey and dark grey with little bits of green and
brown give it a very realistic feel.
But you didn't stop there, you've got all those little things - the dining
room, that cool catapult, the nifty bull statue (in exactly the right
place), and my favorite new little feature, your bridge. That is awesome.
I could go on and on about this one - I don't think one can really
appreciate it without seeing it in person.

Thanks Chris! It was very hard building the cliffsides so they looked
natural. The green couldn't be too concentrated or else it just looked
weird (in my opionion anyway.) But yes, I tried to make it look as natural
as possible, and I think it works out pretty good.

I almost wish I could have gone back and put in more little things, but just
didn't have the time before the fair. Also, I couldn't come up with any
other things the rooms should have been designed for, so I just left it how
it was.

Beautiful! I think the tendency in MOCs is moving from stand alone (1) to
contextual ones (2). Your's is truly a "slice"

Thanks Pawel! I really like building in the (2) style; building the
landscape first, then building the structure around it. Then it's like if I
were building a real building, working with what I've been given, working
around the landscape and such. I think it makes building a lot more
challenging, which makes it more fun. I'm glad to see more people doing it
as well. I really makes the structures more appealing, in my opinion.

What exactly do you mean, "didn't come out"? The quality didn't turn out
well? Or that you can't see much from the way they were taken? If they
just didn't show up, maybe try refreshing it a couple times, because I can

The quality was fine, its just for a couple of them the squares had little

| Wilson,
Very cool. This is one of the most original fortress MOCs I've seen. As
others have said, I love how it is built in a "real" location--the design of
the fortress is based around the setting in which it is located. A great
example of this is how the interior of some rooms (e.g. the prison) have
sloped walls, since this is built up on a pre-existing sloped hill. Lots of
cool details througout.
This makes me think of some of the cliff dwellings built by native
americans, such as these:
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/9637/mvnpdwel/mvnpdwel.htm
I've always wanted to build something like that. Maybe now I'll be inspired
to try something.
I'd love to see more with this, like perhaps they would have a ship, since
they have a base built on a harbor. It would also be cool to have another
army invade and show the battle all through the cliffs and bridges.
Oh, clicking around your site I really liked your other things, like the
castle built up in the sky on a pillar of BURPs, and some of your figs are
really cool (I love the elementals, especially). I haven't gotten to read
your stories yet, but I will.

Cool, thanks Bruce! Building around the landscape was a really fun
challenge for this project. And I think the sloped walls on the inside give
it a very aesthetic and natural look, which makes it more fun to look at.

Yeah, I've seen some of those before, but they never really came to mind
while I was in the process of building the Outpost. Some of the resemblance
are uncanny, though! :-)
(That's possibly the first time I've ever typed *uncanny* on my computer.
Just to let you know, in case you were interested, which you probably weren't.)

Yeah, I want to incorporate it into at least one story before I take it
down. I agree with you on the battle part, that would be pretty fun to make!

Thanks Christian. I wish I would have taken more pictures myself, as well.
It's a lot of fun to look back and see what you intended to do, and then see
the final product and what it eventually mutated into. Don't worry though,
I plan on doing this more regularly when I build my next large project.
