| In February 2002 LEGO® released the 10020 Santa Fe Super Chief as a special
numbered limited edition. In effort to track the release numbers this
registry has been created.
If you own a limited edition LEGO® Santa Fe Super Chief please visit the
registry and complete the submission form so we can add your train to the list.
This registry will serve no other purpose but to give us all an idea of how
many and what numbers of the Super Chiefs are being distributed. This list
will not be used for any other means and all information submitted is purely
for the curious to keep a simple record of the Limited Editions.
If you have a 10020 to add to the list, please free to enter as much or as
little information about you and your train. The number of your train is the
most important thing, plus the location information would also desired.
Other information such as name, email and web address are purely optional.
Some kind of name would be nice though, even if its just a first name or
handle.
So when your Santa Fe Super Chief arive visit the registry and add your
number to the list.
You can visit the registry at:

Great job, well done. Some constructive criticism:
Some of the fields look a bit cramp to me. Approximately how many characters
are available for "Owner Name" before the tail is visualy cut off in the list?
"Country" seems to be a little short also, are we supposed to fill in the
official international abbreviations for country names? For instance: GB for
Great Brittan, F for France, G for Germany, NL for The Netherlands?
To keep the list neat and tidy, I believe you should provide some more
formatting instructions for the users on your site.
I'm thinking about: Skip the character when you fill in the "Sequence
Number", the "Country" and what to do with "State/Provence" in case you're
from outside Australia, USA, Canada and other massive states, should we
leave the field blank or fill in a code meaning "does not apply here" ?
With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen.

Well the updating of the list will be a manual process at this point, so
I'll handle the formatting of the data once it arrives (for now). As this
project takes off I'll probally be adding more of an automated process and
will make the fields a bit more intuitive as the days go by.
I don't know about skipping the character at this point, we don't know
really what the number sceme will be, so the character might be an important
part of the unique number. I figure that more information will be better
than less.
As for the countries, I plan on adding a combo box with country selection to
keep it simple and to keep it consistant.
Thanks for the input, I'll put it all to go use as the week goes on....and I
have time.

Hey JT-
As I was building an 8 wide version of the Super Chief, I got to thinking-- since
my sets will be kit-bashed-- maybe it would be fun to include a place on the
registry as to when the particular SC in question got scrapped:-)

Good idea. Some of mine are gonna be scrapped the day they arrive... (I have
a mind to try an Alco PA ish variant)
Also probably want to correctly credit the Santa Fe "circle plus sign" logo,
the chief drumhead and other decorative material as trade dress of the ATSF
Railway, a predecessor railway of BNSF, as was noted in another thread.

Which brings to mind an interesting point: Is it *really* scrapping if the set never
got built in the first place? (as will be the case with mine) Perhaps I'll have to
buy a third to build for comparison. And perhaps I'll buy another one to keep MIB if
one of the numbers I've bought is particularly collectible.. :-)

| You're just trying to make work for me aren't you John? :)
The only problem with setting the Registry up so that you can update your
information is that I would have to have some kind of login system so I know
it's you changing your stuff.
Maybe I can add a check box so you can say if you are planning on building
the engine or "kit bashing" it.

I get a blank page on Netscape 4.78 on Windows 2000. I think the
problem is a missing </FRAME> tag. If you directly load the page it
works fine:

Is this why I can't access the registry?
I received 1522, 1527, and 1636 today. I built 1636 - a very enjoyable
build and what a great collection of parts.

the pasting it in the HTML source, so the registry right now is pure HTML so
basicly any browser should be able to read it. (this is as of 2/23/2002

I can see the new version now with no problem.

While I can see the registry now, I am unable to complete the registration

This fix worked for me, I'm able to see the site again at link:
http://www.ngltc.org/sfregistry.htm instead of a blank page. Thank you.

Hm, I don't know about Netscape, but it still just plain doesn't load in IE
5.5 on Win2000- on either address.
It may be a firewall problem on my end, though. When I run it through
another server to fetch it, it works fine. Unfortunately, Babelfish doesn't
offer to translate English to English, so I'm translating it from Spanish to
English. Heh- I don't think that Jeroen de Haan is Spanish, but it does get
translated in an amusing way.
Here's my error- I don't know enough about this sort of thing to tell if
this is coming from your end or mine:

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I'm confused about a couple of things; please forgive my obtuseness. ;-)
(1) What are these 'sequence numbers?' Are the people who buy these Santa
Fe engines making them up, or do they appear somewhere on the box or on the
model itself?
(2) The list shows people who purchased their engine(s) on 2/19 through
today's date! Are you finding the engine in a store, and if so, which store
where? Or are you ordering the engine from lego.com and you're given a
sequence number at the time of purchase?
Thanks for clearing up my confusion! :-)

Hey Brian!
The amount of info available on this new Santa Fe(tm) Super Chief(tm) set
can be a bit overwhelming, everything you asked has been answered already if
you read all the threads. But it's a bit much!
The sequence number appears on a tile, which you can place on the model if
you so choose, it goes on the red part aft of the nose curve. It's matched
by a similar tile on the other side which has the LEGO(r) square logo. I
believe (but can't confirm) that this is NOT the "engine number". Here's a
picture that Huw M. took of one of his:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=125038
His unit is A1013 (one of the lowest numbers seen so far)
Note that on the box behind it, the engine is carrying a black and white
"engine number" or "number plate" with 301, but it's pretty clearly a
sticker rather than a tile. That's a sticker that I suspect Huw didn't apply
to his model.
AFAIK (I haven't gotten any of mine delivered yet) it's not on the outside
of the box. The set comes with supplemental parts packs but I'm not sure what
that's about.
OK, some digression:
Note that there is some prototype validity to these "dual numbers". One can
think of the Axxxx number as the "builder's number". Each prototype
individual unit had a number assigned by the builder. This appears on the
builders plate (a ((1) brass plate affixed to the locomotive (1) on or near
the frame on or near the cab area). These numbers were unique across all
units of all types made by the builder.
The "301" number corresponds to the unit number assigned by the railroad.
This number could, and did, change during the life of the unit. For example,
early diesels (including some early Santa Fe units similar to this model
that were used to power the Super Chief named train (2) ) had numbers such
as 301A,301B, 301C, 301D denoting a 4 unit A-B-B-A lashup which was intended
to remain connected together with all 4 units assigned and tracked together.
Sometimes these units were even connected with drawbars instead of couplers.
But the railroads soon discovered the folly of this idea. If 301C got sick,
it meant you had to take the entire 4 units out of service to fix C. So the
drawbars were removed and units would get swapped out. So you'd see a lashup
that was 301A, 303B, 305B, 302D or something similarly wacky. The letters
hurt more than they helped. So the units got renumbered removing the letter
suffix and 301A-D might become 3011-3014 or whatever.
Typically a locomotive has a useful life well in excess of 20 years and I'd
estimate would be renumbered an average of 4-5 times in its life (due to
mergers requiring number rationalization, sales on the aftermarket,
corporate whim, or whatever). Some units go cradle to grave never being
renumbered at all. But that's about as rare as a unit going its life without
ever getting a different paint scheme.
On to your next question:
AFAIK this set is "not available in any store". People who have theirs
already ordered them from Lego Direct... you do not get a sequence number at
time of purchase. Except for the first 5 numbers which are reserved by LEGO,
the numbers are handed out randomly as near as we can tell, as you do not
seem to get adjacent numbers if you order at the same time.
1 - usually but not always!!!
2 - remember the misnomer... the Super Chief is a train. NOT a locomotive.
But indulge LD... they got us a neat model even if it's misnamed.

Larry, I believe that the Santa Fe trains might be coming to the Lego
stores, so keep your eyes peeled...

That fits the TLC definition of "not available in any store"... they don't
count their own retail (outlets, imagination centers, park stores)... So
this isn't news, really. Guarded Inn is "not available in any store" either.
(note my use of quotes)
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
| |
| Just Conjecture but...
Brad Justus at BricksWest indicated that the first 10,000 units of the set
10020 were "limited edition" sets with the numbers specific for each set, the
subject of the registry now going on. He indicated that the Super Chief set
would continue beyond this as a set without the designation "limited edition."
Don't quote me on this, but that was my understanding. He also indicated that
they would be available in the Lego Outlets and stores eventually.
I am assuming this and basing this on nothing other than complete conjecture,
but it seems reasonable that there will be regular sets available at the stores
but not necessarily the "limited edition" sets. Call me crazy but I think by
the time this set gets into Lego Retail Outlets, the 10,000 "limited edition"
units will be gone.
Does anyone have any idea what the typical production run of a LEGO Set is? I
believe that it must exceed 10,000 by a fairly large margin. After all, if you
place one set in every Target, K-Mart, KB Toys, Toys-R-Us, Wal-Mart, etc. will
you not have at least 10,000 there?
The conjecture is mine.

My understanding as well.

I'll tell you what's crazy-- they are limiting customers to 3 per household. The
first 10,000 will probably be gone by the end of next week!

For retail, I'd say most sets of a typical theme are produced in the 1,000,000s.
LD produces a lot shorter runs, on the scale of what we're seeing here.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Hello James,
I've seen that Martijn de Lange from The Netherlands registered his Santa Fe
Super Chief as number 3857, so without a leading A. Has he made a mistake,
or are there realy numbers without a alphabetic character?
I use MS Internet Explorer 4.0 running on Windows NT, but it still opens a
blank page if I use link: http://www.ngltc.org/sfregistry.htm
However, I see the site perfectly when I use the full link:
http://www24.brinkster.com/ngltc/sfregistry.asp
With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen.

I could see it yesterday when I was at work but I can't see it from home
(same computer, a laptop I haul back and forth). I can however see the
regular NGLTC web site. I get a blank page with Netscape and I get a "The
page cannot be displayed" error from IE.

I noticed that too. Without the "A", it does not appaer in it's correct
place in the list.

Hello there,
I can't find the registry.
Is it still available somewhere?

| |
| Hello Jean-Marc, the NGLTC site has been disabled for quite some time but I do
have a back up of the registry, just don't have it hosted anywhere right now.
