Outside events?  Experiences to share?  Well, since you ask, yes.

When PNLTC did our layout with the LEGO 25th Anniversary truck tour in
Portland back in 1998, we were setup underneath a tent right next to the cab
of the LEGO truck.  Our layout was 5x17.5 feet, rather small for us, and was
underneath a 10x25' tent without sidewalls.  Worked pretty well.  Only one
problem.  The tent rental place screwed up the order and took the tent down
the night between the two days of the show.  When we showed up Sunday morning,
the tables were covered with rain.  Lucky for us we packed up everything the
night before.  We didn't have complete confidence in the security guard that
was going to be there through the night so we decided to play it safe.  Good
thing.  We got the tent company on the cell phone and had them back out there
in an hour and we were up and running just 15 minutes after the truck tour
event started for the day.

So two words of advice:

1) Confirm your tent reservation.
2) Be very careful about overnight security.

It will be a long time before I even think of doing an outside event again.
Especially in Portland where it tends to rain a lot.

And with that, good luck!

Just tool a look at your layout. After a few minutes I thought, "Wow,
that is a pretty big layout." So, how big is it?

It's 10 by ~17 feet.  This is WAMALUG's layout at the Sixth Annual Manassas • Railway Festival in VA.
There will be several layouts in all the major
scales and even 'real' trains.  Virginia Railway Express(a local commuter • line)
will be sponsoring rail excursions and I think there will be some equipment
brought in by Amtrak and Norfolk Southern.  There will also be live
entertainment, historical renactments, lots of food, etc.

Actually this is going to be a pretty unique experiance for us- the show
takes place in a parking lot.  We have a tent to cover the layout.  Has
any of the clubs ever had a outside event and are there any experiances
you can share?

(...) <snipped description> Thanks for sharing your experiance... Hopefully it won't rain here that weekend. Also the show is on;y one day so there shouldn't be any security problems. -chris (24 years ago, 4-May-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.org.us.wamalug, lugnet.trains.org)
