In the US the yard goat is whatever power has yard duty. Yardmaster's whim, to
a certain extent. Sometimes it's a relatively small engine, like a SW (which I
modeled). Almost never would it be a rigid frame like, you only see those in
industrial use. Sometimes it may be a multi unit lashup with upwards of 10000
horsepower available. (if you're working a flat yard and making up 100 car
trains you need lots of tractive effort... ditto++ if you're shoving 100 cars
off the lead track up the hump of a humpyard)

A lot of the time the yard goat will be an engine/slug combination, or even an
slug/engine/slug because what is needed is starting power and that's where lots
and lots of traction motors help more than raw horsepower. The goat may never
get above 10 MPH all day long.

Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions on designing a yard. Here is the current plan for the layout. (URL) 20 baseplates by 12 baseplates. Ignore the roadplates under the rails on the righthand side, they are just placeholders for the table (...) (25 years ago, 2-May-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.org.us.wamalug)
