I'm ignoring the IR bulge, as well.
But, here is another try at it:

The fence method probably has interference with the fact that a stud height
would interfer-- it doesn't in CAD, but we remember that studs are greater than
1/2 plate thick, which is a bummer.
The light sabre method would use a lot of sabres! And, I don't think it can
work around the IR bulge.
