Radio-controlled model airplanes often have the tubing. You can find Lego-pneumatic-compatible tubing and connectors at hobby shops that sell parts for radio-controlled model airplanes. As to more traction, you could use alternating regular chain links and tread links and mount a 1x4 plate on each tread link, studs out. I'm not sure how realistic this would (...) It's been interesting to follow the progress of the creation of this model, and the finished model is certainly great!
