I've never given any figure "rank" over each other (just my own wussy way of
play when I was ten), but rather considered their job in a given Lego set as a
clue to what their color might indicate as their "Class". Here's how I always
broke 'em down:
White: Technicians, grunt laborers...the "Ensign Johnson" (OK, here's one
rank) that Kirk would send into the foxhole. If some little car is being
driven (but not flown), there's a white spaceman on it, off collecting rocks
somewhere.
Red: Pilots. If something is being flown, they're (usually) doing it.
Yellow: Away-mission specialists. They can lauch a rocket, drive
complicated-looking vehicles, etc.
Blue: The consensus calls these guys "scientists," and I agree with it. I'd
like to put a finer point on their Class as being "lab scientists."
Black: Theorists, Special Ops, Chief Research.
-----
Now I'll have some fun by taking various set boxes off the shelves, check out
what each guy is doing on the box, and analyze who's doing what. I'll look for
some anomalies, along the way, and try to BS my way through it as much as I
feel you'd all tolerate:
#918 Space Transport: Here's a red guy piloting a spaceship. So far, so good.
#454 Space Shuttle: Uh oh, I'm already in trouble. It's a white spaceman
piloting this thing! Clearly, this is a short-range transport, and he's flying
into a volcano to collect sulfur samples.
#6970 Beta-1 Command Base: Two white guys toiling away in tiny grey crafts,
two red guys drinking coffee inside the base, all cozy. Excellent examples of
command structure.
#6972 Polaris-I Space Lab: Three blue spacemen, all working diligently in a
lab, concocting experiments and looking very suave in general (but they're not
generals...I covered this).
#6952 Solar Power Transporter: White guy flying around with a tool, red guy
behind the wheel, black guy in the center, operating a computer. Life is good.
But, what's with the robot? he's following the vehilce, waving his arms,
saying "Wait for meee!!!" The spacemen are all grinning maliciously, but
that's nothing new at all, is it?
#6891 Gamma-V Laser Craft: A lone black spaceman piloting a spaceship. (gulp)
O.K., this is a special transport ship for elite-class officers...wait...I
said no ranks...dang. Verdict's out here.
#6808 Galaxy Trekkor, #6805 Astro Dasher, AND #6824 Space Dart-I: In each of
these, why is there a blue pilot in a tiny spaceship? Because he/she's on
his/her way back to Polaris-I, and this is his/her personal ship. Why the
hell/herll not.
#6874 Moonrover: Yellow guy driving (of course! It's a specialized science
vessel!), Red guy piloting a tiny probe. You need good pilots on these more
delicate missions, even for short-range vehicles. (phew)
#6926 Mobile Recovery Vehicle AND #6950 Mobile Rocket Transport: Two yellow
guys driving a complicated-looking vehicle. Case closed on the yellow guys.
#6985 Cosmic Fleet Voyager: Red guy piloting. OK so far. White guy looking
out the window...waiting for orders...no problem. Yellow guy stasnding near a
specialized little research vehicle...perfect! Oh, NO!! What is this black
spaceman doing...he's wandering around the middle of nowhere with a metal
detector! What sort of specialist is this? A screw-up-Dave's-thoery-theorist?
#6951 Robot Command Center: Yellow guy in a car...red guy in a tiny
spaceship...good, and oh, excellent: The black spaceman is again simply
wandering aimlessly on the ground, pointing a gun at what appears to
be...nothing at all. These theorists are an odd lot, and clearly need
alone-time to, uh...think.
AND...the coupe-de-gras for all color-Class-gaffes:
#6971 Inter-Galactic Command Base: Ugh! Yellow guy's driving a surface
speeder of some sort, clearly not at all on a special mission but joyriding,
perhaps drunk off his can. Then there's a blue guy piloting a small white
spaceship! The black spaceman is standing on a ramp, aiming a gun at him!!
"Get down off that thing...your bunsen burners are all still on! That's
it...you're TOAST!!" ZAP! ZAP!! KABOOM!!! EVERYONE'S DEAD!!!!
---
At least, this is how *I* played with my sets when I was 12 or so. I would
certainly never do this klind of thing today. Nope. I welcome more
speculation on other sets; this was fun....
Dave (jot and jab)
P.S. I never bothered trying to classify post-"Classic" mini-figs. Futuron
guys...it's all just yellow and blue, and what fun is that. And the all-black
Blacktrons? When you're evil, you don't need a Class. Everyone kills everyone
else.
THE END.

| This may be rehashing an old topic, but has anyone ever thought about what each color might mean for the old space mini-figs? Here's my theory: Yellow= Pilots- they always seemed to be the figs that came with spaceships White= Technicians- they (...) (25 years ago, 5-Nov-99, to lugnet.space)
