I had forgotten that you can use a Lego Fiber Optic unit for a rotation
sensor. 8 count per rev.

There is one in Mibo's left hind leg. about half way up the leg. there are 8
tiny holes to insert the fiber optics. This could be very useful for
sequencing the tool drum.
Also the light sensor has been used by rotating a disk with light and dark
segments in front of the sensor. You may have to build a second machine
that is bigger than your plan. Actually cutting material adds a new level of
excitement to the project.
I built a few that would not cut material. They did not have rigid axes to
support the pressure of cutting. You will learn many things as you engineer
your mill.
