One thread of this discussion went down the suction cup path for getting a
CD off a stack. What of non-suction-cup alternatives that could be built
from pure LEGO?

Simply having a thin liftarm slide off the top one won't work because the
CDs would get damaged (theoretically; after all, each CD would only go
through this once).

What I was thinking about was a triplet or more of tank treads with their
long axes oriented vertically. For the top view, think of a Mercedes-Benz
logo with a tank tread pointed directly down away from you at each place
where the three-pointed star intersects the circle. The diameter of this
structure measured at the tank treads' axles would be slightly larger than a
CD. Lower these vertical treads onto a stack of CDs as they're spun so that
the inside of the treads is going up. The curvature of the bottom of the
treads (because of the wheels they're on) allows the treads to engage the
edges of the topmost CD. When it rises, raise the structure and then do with
it what you will.

I don't know how to detect you've got a CD. Bend in the tank treads?

Does the stack of CD's need to have a spindle?

Russ

Subject: CD auto feeder project

I haven't yet got my RIS, but I've promised it as a gift for myself for my
upcoming birthday.
But I've already set about creating my first challange; I want to create a
simple arm roboot that will act as an auto feeder to a CD drive.
It should recognise when the CD rom drive on a PC has opened, remove the CD
to the out stack, move a CD from the in stack to the CD rom drive and close
the CD drive.
I don't think I'll have a problem with knowing when the drive opens, or
closing it afterwords, nor do I feel knowing where the CD/in/out trays will
be too difficult. What I feel is beyond my grasp (sorry for the phun) is th
finger on the end of the arm that must retrive the top disk from a large
stack of CDs and not drop it as the arm moves from point to point.
This is pretty much what I'm trying to achive, though my first attempt will
be missing several features.
