You might also want to check out the landing gear for the 8480 Space Shuttle (my all-time favorite set, BTW :) on Lugnet. It uses shafts and cogs to move the landing gear, but when the landing gear is extended the weight is borne by the frame of the (...) (23 years ago, 7-Feb-02, to lugnet.robotics)

I've just uploaded a new release of BricxCC. Version 3.3.3.7 completes the implementation of the configurable Tools feature. Transfer item parameter macros are now functional. When you prepare the 2x2 piece of the electric plate, cut the center circular section away from the underneath. Then, solder the (...) (23 years ago, 6-Feb-02, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

I've bought some lego electric plates (part 5037) from lego.com, and they seem to be withstanding the heat of a soldering iorn quite well (that was my fear... that I would turn them into bubbling messes).
