Actually, you can make a half way decent replica of the Lego two plate high
connector at this point quite easily.
When you prepare the 2x2 piece of the electric plate, cut the center
circular section away from the underneath. Then, solder the two wires to the
wide area of metal half way between the lug recesses on each side. Route the
wires toward the center where the circular section used to be, then bend
them to pass out in the direction that used to pass along the length of the
original 2x8 piece. Now, you will find you can press (or glue) a second
piece of 2x2 electric plate on the underneath, thus making a Lego style
connector which works from top or bottom and which has a wire (two
conductors worth of shredded ribbon as you describe) out the side. I have
made these and they work quite well, although they are not exactly
cosmetically perfect since you can see the cut ends of the original 2x8
piece of electric plate at each side.
If this all sounds a bit confusing, I'll email you a quick sketch. Lugnet
won't allow attachments even if they are a .gif that could be worth a
thousand words ;)

| I've bought some lego electric plates (part 5037) from lego.com, and they seem to be withstanding the heat of a soldering iorn quite well (that was my fear... that I would turn them into bubbling messes). Actually they're holding up better than the (...) (23 years ago, 6-Feb-02, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
