What if it were "OK and acceptable" to post .DAT files in any group, as long
as they were accompanied by commentary?  I can see them being useful in a
discussion of castles, or space ships, or other areas where someone might
not want to have to send people on a wild goose chase into a dedicated group
just for one or two odd models once in a while...

They are useful ONLY for people who have the ability to view them. For
the rest of us, they are as non-useful as binaries in a textual group.
What is the population of LDraw vs non-LDraw users?

The one .DAT that was posted was a LONG, meaningless numbers post to
me. The discussion on top was fine, sure. But what happens when
someone replies, and includes ALL the information (including the
meaningless data) and then comments are interspersed? And if they have
footnotes, then you have to page down through the .DAT to see the
footnotes... All in alll, I'd REALLY prefer that these go in their own
group. You can post one and then refer to it by Message-ID number when
making comments -- you can post it once and then refer back as many
times as you need. AND, it would make it easier to archive these
babies if they are in a central location.

Although DAT files are going to be annoying in non-DAT groups, my question
is, how natural is it for people to write a paragraph or two about their
creation above the data?  If they do that, the DAT data won't be annoying
(right?)...  It seems to me like it'd be natural, and netiquette too.  Hmm.

No. It would still be annoying because it is meaningless unless you
have the LCAD program to view it. What you would end up with is a
paragraph or two referring to something that you can not see. And then
a page or so of gibberish.

How do these things work on the L-CAD mailing list?  Do people trade DAT
files there often and with commentary?

But everyone on the L-CAD mailing list is interested in LCAD.
