Train shows are not LEGO's "window" they are the clubs "window".  My question
is why should we try so hard to promote LEGO sets?  I don't see any of the
other clubs trying to promote Bachmann, Pola, Atlas, or other products so why
should put the effort in to promote LEGO products?  To me the layout is
promotion enough.

I agree that it's not the LTCs job or purpose to sell train sets for LEGO,
but I do think that the LTC have a purpose of not only displaying layouts
but to promote the hobby of LEGO trains. Until the day comes where LEGO
trains are as well known as the other train lines the LTC have been given
the burdon of educating the public about the LEGO train line.

I really don't see it as a big deal to have an example or two of what the
current sets are. Even if it's just a copy of the S@H catalog turned to the
train page. Some of the first NGLTC show had a few pages pinned up on a
information board to show visitors about the current sets.

I actually think that one of the best things TLC could do would be to hire
someone to follow the train shows as a vendor like some other companys do.  If
that were the case then we could point people to them when the inevitable
questions come and they can point people to us to see what can be done with a
little imagination.  Now TLC might not think this would be a profitable idea
but if thats the case they are not looking at the bigger picture.  This would
not just serve to sell some sets and accessories but to advertise S@H as well.

How many times have we all heard "I didn't know LEGO made trains" then you give
the history and you get a frown when you say it is only available via mail
order?  Buy having a vendor table at the shows TLC would sell some sets but
more importantly get the word out about S@H and LEGO.com.

I this is were LEGO should allow small vendors without stores to have
wholesale access to the train lines, then you might see some vendors selling
LEGO at the shows like Greenberg. I have vendors all the time telling me
that they could sell LEGO left and right if they had access to it. Heck the
LTC could too, but then then you change from a presenter to a vendor at many
of the shows and have to pay to display at the shows.

(...) Since NELUG did this at the train show (along with showing off empty boxes for some sets), I'm relatively sure what Eric K is arguing against is showing off LEGO sets assembled and in the layout. I have to agree with him, there. eric (24 years ago, 4-Jan-01, to lugnet.org.us.michlug, lugnet.org.us.nclug, lugnet.org.us.nelug, lugnet.trains.org)

(...) You are correct in that the TCS display did have some stock sets but as you say that was kind of the point and it is their window after all.
