To get the turntable as low as possible I think the key is to remove
the requirement that the motor be located under the rotating track.
Here are a couple of possibilities:
* If you put the motor outside the circle and have it drive a wheel
with rubber tire that is pressed against the outside edge of the
turntable, then that would not only allow you to go down to maybe
even less than 2 bricks high (put the motor inside a decorative
building near the edge of the turntable), but also remove the need
to gear down the motor.
* Or use a large pulley system to connect a motor outside the circle
with the center hub.
* Another possibility would be to put a "control shack" on the
turntable itself, alongside the tracks, and to have the motor
concealed in that. So that way the motor can stick up above the
track level, but still rotate along with the tracks.
