Okay... new plan! :)
Those of us who have visited Morgantown, West Virginia will instantly recognise
this chassis design. :) Its very, very heavily inspired by the Boeing-built
Morgantown
Personal Rapid Transit. In the worlds only functional PRT system, individual
cabins hug either the left or right guide rail, to make decisions about where
they would like to go. They typically hug left to stay on the main guideway
(bypassing offline stations), and hug right to exit, then find an appropriate
docking berth.
Anyway, Im going woefully off topic. This is a 4-wheel steer chassis that can
hug 9V monorail guideway. The idea being we could have a nice, rigid oval of
monorail guideway in the middle, and the shuttles move around the perimeter of
said oval and stop at the assembly stations. There are several distinct
advantages to doing this over the 9V train bodies:
- Because were not relying on a fixed gear ratio on the motors, we can use any motor we like; in this case, Ive got a 9V gearmotor in a 3:1 reduction to the recycle truck tires. This makes things much easier to control.
- The chassis size is larger and far more robust.
- The centre of gravity of the chassis and assembly pallet is much lower, making it more stable.
Ive whipped up this one with a motor on each wheel just to keep things modular;
of course its not necessary, and we could simply have one or two wheels driven.
If its two, they should be on the same side, to eliminate differential fighting
in wheel speeds.
Im pumped!
