So what holds the grey and yellow "bumpers" on?  Do they just hook on
the motor hooks or are they actually attached somehow?

(...) There are small plastic clips at the base of the train motor; these clasp under the 1x3 inverted slopes to lock them in place (quite ridgidly, I might add).
