Wait a minute, I'm not the one adding a rule after the rule page as been
up for months. What's your motive. :-)

I'm also not saying the match has to go 3 minutes. As you say below, a
gentleman's agreement to end the match early is alway a valid way to end
a match.
But if I know my robot has something left in him then I wouldn't end the
match.
I don't think this new rule will significant reduce match times.
Plus it messes with the whole idea of pulling the other robot into the
pit. That's really the way to end a tug of war match. It's not about
pulling some flag over some arbitrary line, it's about pulling people
into a pit.

Or knowledge that their bot has no more tricks up it sleeve.

This is not the only reason to play out rope. And I don't think it's
required to build edge detection to defeat this strategy.
