The original game was described to me as: A line is placed a given
distance from a wall. Two robots drag race towards the wall. The first
robot to cross the line and not touch the wall wins.
This is the basic contest our contest is based on.
We are now talking about running the game on tables instead of the floor
against a wall. The problem with tables is you can extend past the end
of the table and give your self more space that the wall in the original
game would not allow for. Additionally it gives you another, and
possibly easier way of detecting when to stop, using edge detection.
If your robot is the full 18" long, depending on how you balance it you
could get almost another 18" of stopping distance by hanging over the edge.
The side of the table however are unimportant. I see no problem using
edge detection to keep you from falling off the edge of the table. I
also have no problem with someone using edge detection at the end of the
table, provided they can do it without passing over the end of the table.
