Guys?

I would think this should not be allowed.  If it is it changes the
nature of the contest.  What's the point in in having the lines across
the table.  The idea was you had to race down and stop within a certain
distance, not race down and stop before you fall off the table.

The original concept, as I understood it, was the cars would race
towards a wall and the first robot to cross the line and stop before
hitting the wall would be the winner.

A purely mechanical solution would be very easy if you are allowed to
extend over the edge of the table.

At the very least I would say you must not have any part of the robot
hang over the edge when you stop at the finish.  But I don't think any
part of the robot should be allowed to hang over the ends of the table
at any point.  Unless the decision is made to change the nature of the
contest.

Derek

(...) What's wrong with allowing a purely mechanical solution? It would be MUCH easier to build an RCX controlled robot, but if someone can make one that's completely mechanical, wouldn't that be cool to see? Isn't that the point? (20 years ago, 27-Sep-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) I agree Derek. I just raised the question to avoid the possibility of a simple mechanical solution, as you have suggested :-) At one point, I thought about the problem of driving straight and detecting when the bot is just about to go over the (...)
