Mike,
I went through this very excersize a week or three ago, and found that I was
trying to make it much more difficult than it needed to be.
After using rpm (I'm using a Red Hat 6.1 installation here) to install all
the necessary packages - and that was the hard part, figuring out the
dependancies - then I was off to dig into startup files and the like.
Then I found, on Gnome's System menu if I recall correctly, an applet that
would switch window systems. Where before it only had Gnome and "Other" it
now had a third item - KDE. I chose it, restarted the system and *poof*
I've been a KDE user ever since.
I can only hope it's as easy for you. If not, drop a message here and I'll
take a look at my notes in more depth (this was on a system at work, I'm not
yet running Linux at home).
