So that the celebration of the aniversary of their birthday doesn't get
lost in the shuffle surrounding the celebration of the aniversary of the
nominal birthday of a certain individual who was born some 2000 years

A more pragmatic reason for many children is that you get more booty
that way (though I have also heard of kids who were born close to
Christmas actually benefiting by getting larger presents).
Now the best time for a birthday might be in early to mid January, so
the parents get to buy your presents at the after Christmas sales...
Of sometime in late spring after the parents get their tax refund (and
the toy stores start clearancing out all the "winter" toys such as LEGO
sets).
