Every news show leaves out bits of news. Is all news censored?

Every library excludes some books. Is that censorship?

Censorship implies a bit more active restriction, I think. Censorship of the news would be when a party involved in delivering the news attempts to delivery a particular piece of news but is denied by their editor, manager, network, the FCC, or what-have-you.

Again, I think this gets into the gray area. When a reporter gets told by their manager that “nah, I don’t think we want to run that story you did about the birthday party at the nursing home because we want to give priority to this other news story”, that’s *technically* censorship. But we wouldn’t usually *call* it censorship, because we reserve that word for more severe restrictions.

Typically, we reserve it for instances where certain people are adamant about publishing information, but are denied against their wishes. In the above case, chances are the reporter would totally understand, and, while perhaps a little mifffed, it’s no big deal to them. But if they were instead crazily insistant that their story was important and ought to have been aired, then we’re starting to get (in my book) bona fide censorship.

(...) Hey, that's pretty good. In essence, omission is not censorship; restriction is. That works at least in the public arena, but it still doesn't apply IMO to a private forum. Still, it's a good rule of thumb. Dave! (17 years ago, 13-Apr-07, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
