To reply to the original before I wade through all the other replies, the answer
would be vaguely the same in my experience. Many atheists and those of a rather
casual nature about religion contribute through standing organizations, many of
which happen to have religious foundations (and if those organizations are doing
a good job, I see no need to duplicate the effort). The biggest contributor and
do-gooder I know is a liberal atheist woman of jewish extraction.
Which is not to say that there arent rather a lot of religious people who dont
take helping out extremely seriously, or there are atheists who dont give a
hoot about anyone but themselves, or that there arent christians absolutely
gloating that the catastrophe was a judgment by God and punishment for the
wicked. I dont see atheists doing the latter.
What the truth of the situation is I couldnt say. My experience with atheists
are they arent a whole lot different about giving than believers are, but that
is only from my limited perspective.
