  Re: Ticket prices going up

(...) Just to poke in again for a minute... I don't consider traveling by common conveyance a "privilege" (at least it should be considered a right in my view). One should be able to travel as a matter of right unless specific damages caused by one (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Ticket prices going up

(...) On this I completely concur--DUI has to be the thing that gets my blood in a boil the most. Traffic weavers are also something I have mentioned that the cameras could and should help catch. It's not the 10 kph crowd I'm having a holy tirade (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Ticket prices going up

(...) Larry didn't say the cameras cause accidents. He said the use of the cameras causes accidents. One the one hand, I see the appeal of a totally automated ticketting system. On the other hand, I wonder who is going to apply human judgement. What (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Ticket prices going up

(...) And again, I would concur with you, Richard--systems should not 'rule' the individual, and Justice should not be left up to machines. But two of the most vocal folks on the side of 'science' are doing away with science when science interferes (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Ticket prices going up

Larry is 100% correct here. His uncharacteristic succinctness is probably just his not wanting to get sucked back into OTD, just as I do not wish to be sucked back in either. But the law must actually be more than merely "just." It has to make sense (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Ticket prices going up

(...) And I definitly concur with the idea that laws should, and must, be just. That said, the posted limit is 100 kph. It is my view that anyone doing anything above 100 kph is, in fact, breaking the law. Pretty much cut 'n dry. Whether the QEW or (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Ticket prices going up

(...) Putting aside whether it's your civic duty to peacefully break unjust laws or not (a topic in its own right!),we're finding here in the states that just because you get a ticket (mailed to you), it doesn't mean you necessarily broke the law. I (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Ticket prices going up

So I'm at my friendly neighbourhood automechanic this morning, getting some much needed work done on my vehicle, and I overhear an older gentleman talking about his trip to Alberta. He said that, when he was in Alberta, he found out that the (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: The ability to sue anyone...

(...) They are not the only ones: 500,000 are stolen in the USA each year. It appears that either the thieves are determined and/or no responsibilities come with ownership. :-/ Scott A (...) (22 years ago, 17-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Customer "Service"

(...) Dave, Thanx, man, that's good to hear. Peace and Long Life, Tony Alexander (22 years ago, 18-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Freedom from information

(...) As an aside, this letter made it into the Guardian yesterday: ==+== Matthew Engel says (Move over John Wayne, January 14) anti-war demos "still failed to get reported anywhere that matters". After reports in the New York Times failed to do (...) (22 years ago, 17-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Pepsi, Coke or Mecca?

(...) I'm pretty sure it is. (...) How did you find the air in fountain bridge? (...) Yes, just along from the Cale’ Sample Rooms. (...) ;) Diggers is a good bar, but not worth making a huge effort for. More of a curiosity really. Pubs worth looking (...) (22 years ago, 17-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Is this ammunition against Sex Offender Registration?

Is this ammunition against sex offender registration? (URL) law enforcement step up to protect this man's rights? I'm not saying that some people may not continue to be dangerous. I'm not saying that this individual will continue to be dangerous. We (...) (22 years ago, 17-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  The ability to sue anyone...

(URL) I will agree that *if* the store was not keeping proper records, and losing guns as stated, someone should sue their pants off... But I would expand the suit to include the NRA (buncha gun toting yahoos), the peeps who feel that they have the (...) (22 years ago, 17-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

The Commons Lose Big: Eldred v. Ashcroft

(URL) now everything belongs to huge, multinational corporations -- possibly forever. Too bad Robert Louis Stevenson did not live to see a day when he could have prevented an abomination like Disney's "Treasure Planet." Funny how a corporate entity (...)   Re: Customer "Service"

In lugnet.off-topic.debate, Tony Alexander writes: <snip> (...) I like it, well written. I had a very similar incident with a subscription to a magazine "gone bad" in which I wrote a very polite yet "take yer subscription, you misrepresented bonus (...)   Customer "Service"

***long post warning*** Submitted for your amusement: I got a non-Lego ad in the mail, and responded to it, asking the company to "Bill Me Later". Today I got what I considered a snotty letter, my first contact after asking this company to "Bill Me (...) (22 years ago, 17-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Pepsi, Coke or Mecca?

(...) It seems I have forgotten the Scottish beer nomenclature... (...) Tee-hee. (...) This rings a bell... I certainly remember the Deuchars IPA. That was one of our favourites, and the number one item to bring home. (Due to tax regulations, (...) (22 years ago, 12-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Pepsi, Coke or Mecca?

(...) Fredrik, That's fighting talk! North of the border, we don't really drink the "bitter" the southern softies drink [although I did have a pint of Tetley’s last night]. The equivalents are things like 70/- [pronounced 70 Shilling and aka (...) (22 years ago, 12-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Pepsi, Coke or Mecca?

(...) Hm, I can't recall seeing that one when I visited Edinburgh. But then again, I was more interested in the bitters and lagers during those visits! I did have a chance to taste some variants during a sort of "open day" in the Caledonian brewery. (...) (22 years ago, 12-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
