LEGO Direct (and Jake in particular) has earned a lot of credit in our AFOL
community. To me this is the only explanation why first reactions to this
announcement weren't severely critical.
LEGO, both Billund and Direct, have been doing quite surprising things in
recent years. Think of product lines like Scala dress dolls, ZNAP,
Mindstorms, Bionicle, Jack Stone and Galidor. Think of bussines cases like
the Mosaic, Bulk Bricks, Internet-only Sculptures, revived Classics, a
numbered limited-edition item (Santa Fe), and even an official MOC set.
As any AFOL I'm very positive about some developments and very critical
about others. Whenever I hear myself complaining, I am quick to tell people:
'Whatever good or bad moves LEGO makes, in any case it keeps the hobby
interesting.'

But in this paticular case I can't help to feel offended. A large-production
company deliberately limits a certain production run and artificially
creates a collectors-item and then sells it to the highest bidder. To my
taste it's indecent and it takes us customers for fools.

LEGO should run this kind of auctions:
- for charity (their production costs of Santa Fe 001 to 010 were about zero)
- for items they can't possibly offer in larger numbers, such as art
projects from the archives or whatever.

Ofcourse I understand a company is free to try whatever bussines case they
choose, and LEGO is a free enterprise. But that doesn't mean we should
encourage it either.
