Jake,

I really like the display base designed for the Super Chief in this auction.
Great work.

I understand it increases costs to produce and print an instruction book for
these extremely limited editions.

I think the display base is glued up to avoid any need for instructions.

That's what Jake's note that you're quoting says, anyway. (the note  speaks
of it being glued in two sections for ease of shipping, presumably one
section is the vertical backdrop and the other the track/base part)

And given an hour or two,  I'm sure the older Lego fans could easily come up
with the display base using the eBay photo.

But how about making the instructions available online for everyone via
http://www.lego.com/eng/trains/workshop/buildinstructions.asp ?

And has there been any progress on instructions for the train shed featured
in a recent Shop at Home catalog?

Someone is selling copies of the shed that they built, along with a CD of
photos of the assembly process, on ebay. They've sold several copies so far
and in addition have a number of other "mild customs" of official sets and
dioramas up for sale.

Keep up the good work at Lego Direct.

- Each of the #0001-0010 sets will include a glued display stand as an
added
bonus. These stands look terrific, and are glued in two pieces, rather
than
one, to help with shipping and future storage (assuming you ever want to
store it away!).

(...) Understood. I just think it would be nice for younger fans (and those who don't have the time or patience to translate a photo to a model) to be able to get instructions and parts inventory for the display base. It is a pretty neat base LD put (...) (23 years ago, 3-Apr-02, to lugnet.lego.direct)
