I bet these ship owners (and
the market they cater to) would snap up some classic early 90's-style models
in a heartbeat.  I hope such a market is not too small for TLC to bother
with; I think even if it was a small profit center it would be a good way to
keep the Lego brand positioned at the forefront of the "educational" and
"quality" toy markets.

The other kind of stores that might be interested are those stores that
specialise in "executive toys" or "adult leisure products" (no, not *that*
kind) or "gizmo shops". Those stores often carry the high-end model-building
sets, huge jigsaws, various electronic games (e.g. chess, bridge, backgammon),
golf accessories etc. I can see those stores having a market for Lego
"classics", robotics,  and the large sets, especially ones aimed at the adult
market, e.g. Ultimate Collectors.

In some ways, Lego does its more "adult" range a disservice by selling it
through traditional toy shops, where it sits cheek-to-jowl with Primo, Duplo,
and with Barbie in the next aisle, as that isn't where "adult toy" customers
are likely to be browsing, if only for reasons of self-image.

I realise that most AFOLs have conquered the fear of looking like a right prat
as they roughly elbow aside small children in order to get to fill their
trolleys in TRU etc. But still, I would bet there are a number of AFOLs who use
S@H partly to avoid any self-image issues they have with shopping at TRU etc.
Maybe TRU should issue masks at the entrance and offer you a brown paper bag to
take your purchases home discreetly :-)

(...) About two years ago I noticed a drastic drop (probably half -- maybe more) in the selection of Lego at one of my favorite indie toy shops. I didn't talk with the staff; I assumed it was because of competition from chains. I had the exact same (...) (23 years ago, 14-Feb-02, to lugnet.lego.direct)
