And why do so many old official pictures (up into the 70s -
I've been wondering about this for decades) show the tires
off-center on the hubs, such that they are expanded in diameter
by the wheel edge on one side? Some show them put
on correctly, so I guess there's nothing weird in the shape
of the grey tires (of which I don't own any).
Any ideas where this comes from?

| (...) Very interesting. This London Bus has 29 white windows (18 - 1x4x2, 7 - 1x3x2, and 4 - 1x2x2) versus the later (1975) London bus we are all familiar with which had 22 red windows (10 -1x4x2, 11 - 1x3x2 and 1 - 1x2x2) as well as 2 - 1x1x1 (...) (25 years ago, 6-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)
