I wonder how much confusion would arise from having two sets of such similar
colours on the shelves at the same time (I imagine the transitional period
is
going to be complicated enough). I can see why people with alerady large
amounts of grey would be disappointed, but this change is hardly going to
make
pre-existing collections 'worthless' to build with.
Okay, maybe I'll hit the ground soon and feel bad about this, but right now
I
can't see anything other than the oppurtunities it presents.

Indeed, but did anyone feel 'betrayed' by the discontinuation of Monorail?
Did
anyone quit Lego because of it. I think we got over that :)

Sets being discontinued are the lifeblood of Lego and something we all
understand, so that doesn't even compare to a color that's been around for
20... + years. It's just not the same in any respect. A color is a totally
different matter, many of us have been collecting that color for years, to
change the color midstream so to speak is just utterly preposterous. Dark
grey isn't something I've used a lot of, so I'm not too upset about that
change, I don't have 20+ years of dark grey collected, though I do have 20+
years of light grey collected, probably in the area of 40-50,000 (at a low
estimate) of light grey brick. I don't mind the introduction of more
colors, another grey is almost welcomed, though at the expense of losing a
mainstream color.... I can't agree with this in the least.
The one thing that keeps coming to mind is a boycott of Lego by all AFOL's,
united we stand, divided we fall. I know this doesn't effect everyone,
though who knows, somewhere down the line something might happen to the
theme of your choice and I'm sure we'd all stand up to help you too. I just
don't believe we account for only 5% of their sales, not when I look at what
we adults spend on our 'hobby'. I sit back and realize how much FREE
advertisement we give Lego because we are rabid about our hobby, all the
train shows, all the different 'Fest's', Eric's (and other's) work being on
the news or in newspapers repeatedly. (Hmmmm bad press comes to mind all of
a sudden too) All this to get shafted with no notice?
Even though this comes to mind, I'm sure it's not totally feasible, some
people would never give up buying Lego no matter the cause. Of course the
Christmas season would be a perfect time for this, when they do most of
their sales.
At least I'm lucky enough to have enough light grey to build most of what I
want with some left over, so I in all reality would probably never have to
buy anymore Lego to continue enjoying my hobby, I just wouldn't be able to
keep all the creations built while building more. So I believe I will enjoy
saving my money from this point on! While I sit and laugh at all the
bricklink stores that feel this is a good thing and can gouge the "h e
double hockey sticks" out of people for their grey bricks. ( another very
sore point to this hobby... )
Just my 2 light grey bricks worth (since they are worth more now...)
