That's true, but you need a lot less of the older sets to make something • good.
Compare this

with this

Counting inflation in the price, too.
I think the latter has more building possibilities.

Yes, that's what I was getting at.  The older sets just seemed more
universal, but that is the price to pay if we want more different types of
pieces and more colors.  The arguement is well supported on both sides.  I'm
not prepared to say "get rid of the new colors and new, modern parts," but
the fact remains: new colors and new parts makes it more difficult to work
with a given set of parts.  That's why I suggest the theme buckets.  It's a
way to tilt the odds back into our favor instead of having to buy several of
the same set for a single part.

I would like to see a Life On Mars (or again, insert your favorite • modern
theme here) BASIC set - a large kit of LoM pieces, but not a specific • model;
just parts made with that theme in mind (LoM colors, some of the modern • LoM
pieces, but mostly 'universal' pieces like plain old plates and • bricks).
They could come with an instruction book with 8 - 10 model ideas just • like
the old BASIC sets, but that wouldn't really be necessary.

I think we all dream of Theme Tubs like this!

Amen. • <snip>
