Registered Mail went missing! —Brian Darrow
I'd like to open a discussion on sending US currency via registered mail for International purchases. I sent $170.00 to Germany from Indiana last November (2001) and when it never arrived I began the process of finding its whereabouts. After filling (...)      (...) Hey Brian. I'd like to say I have a similar problem. Its not with currency though and it never came through. Geordan Hankinson and I had a trade. He sent it and it never came to me! Is it possible to get this traced? I really needed those (...) (23 years ago, 30-Mar-02, to lugnet.general)

Re: Registered Mail went missing! —Brian Darrow
Evan, Was Geordan's parcel sent via registered mail? I'm trying to find out this same question. Is there any need to send something registered if all the post office can do is tell you it's lost when it never shows up! I already new my package was (...)           Re: Registered Mail went missing! —Frank Filz
(...) What you are getting with Registered mail is that the item is shipped in a locked container. This means only postal employees ever have any chance of handling it. It doesn't really confer any additional services (there are other services for (...) (23 years ago, 1-Apr-02, to lugnet.general, lugnet.market.shipping)

(...) That is true, but there is more to it than just that. I just called the local postmaster to confirm my understanding about how 'registered' mail is handled. Registered mail has to be signed off at each step of the way. Each office that (...) (23 years ago, 1-Apr-02, to lugnet.market.shipping)

Re: Registered Mail went missing! —Rob Doucette
(...) USPS Form 542: "Inquiry About a Registered Article or an Insured Parcel or an Ordinary Article" must be filed to trace the package. I currently have an insured package MIA to the Netherlands. I filed the form over a month ago and am still (...) (23 years ago, 1-Apr-02, to lugnet.market.shipping)

I have had a similar problem, I sent a parcel to the states (sry, cant remember to whom, please come forward, Jason or Robert or Chad?) with some train sets. I requested a search for it, but they didt seem entusiastic about it. The happy ending is (...) (23 years ago, 1-Apr-02, to lugnet.general)

Re: Registered Mail went missing! —Kerry Raymond
(...) No, this is a common misconception. It is primarily about proving that the sending/receiving occurred, not about guaranteeing delivery, and certainly not about finding out where it went. What you got is proof that the recipient really didn't (...) (23 years ago, 2-Apr-02, to lugnet.general)

Re: Registered Mail went missing! —Brian Darrow
Thanks to everyone who provided info on my folly. I must admit that it never occurred to me the letter could go missing while it was under lock and key. I was also under the misconception that it could be traced. This has been a costly lesson. I've (...) (23 years ago, 2-Apr-02, to lugnet.general)

Re: Registered Mail went missing! —Melody Brown
(...) Hi Brian... I think that is correct. I think it's illegal/not allowed in any form to send cash (cash alone). I actually had a registered letter arrive from the US with far more than enough stamps on it - it took almost 3 weeks to arrive!!! (...) (23 years ago, 2-Apr-02, to lugnet.general)

Re: Registered Mail went missing! —Kerry Raymond
(...) No, it varies from country to country, and from carrier to carrier. It is my understanding that it is OK to send money as far as USPS is concerned.
