Well, I finally printed out the instructions.  Seems it's a 44x44 baseplate,
with 2 extra studs on each side for the frame.  The frame is made of 11 2x4
bricks (I'm assuming it's a new kind of brick?), and 4 2x2 corner bricks.  The
design is made out of either 1x1 brick or 1x1 plates in 5 colors (white, light
grey, grey, dark grey and black).  The instructions themselves are one 2
pages.  One of your picture, with studs/colors overlayed, and the other with a
big grid, and the numbers (1-5) for each brick.

Seems like an endless source for 1x1 bricks/plates (I'm guessing bricks).  in
light gray too!

:)

Hi, I just browsed shop.lego.com and 'mosaic' is added to the 'S@H exclusives' section! The setnumber appears to be 3443 ... Text reads: "Try out the NEW Brick-o-Lizer where you can turn a digital image into a LEGO Mosaic - a picture made of LEGO (...) (24 years ago, 7-Nov-00, to lugnet.general) !!
