First let me say that I had a great time at last year's Brickswest, and I'm
greatly looking forward to this year's event. Looking over the schedule of
sessions for Brickswest 2003 I see a lot of empty slots for sessions. I'm
not sure if most of these have already been filled up by now and the
schedule just hasn't been updated, or if maybe it's too late to add any new
sessions, but I thought it might be productive to suggest some ideas for
sessions here -- ones that I would definitely attend if someone were to
volunteer to present them. So here are my sugestions:
1) Introduction to Bricklink
-tips and tricks to find the LEGO elements you need at the best prices
-how to set up your own successful Bricklink store
Does anybody know who runs Bricklink and whether they attend events link
BricksWest? Are any people who run very successful Bricklink stores
attending Brickswest? It would be interesting to discuss just how much
profit there is to make in the second-hand LEGO reseller market.
2) LEGO legal issues
-how to avoid trouble with LEGO lawyers
-what is and is not in accordance with the Fair Play policy
-what sort of things are legal and not legal to sell/resell
-past cases of LEGO legal issues
I'm not sure who would be a good candidate to present this sort of session.
Maybe someone with a legal background. It would be great if someone from
LEGO could field attendee questions, but I don't know if that's something
that could be organized in less than a month.
3) Modifying LEGO
-making custom minifigs and custom or modified elements
I've certainly seen a lot of very cool custom minifigs on the web, but I
don't know if any of the good customizers are planning on attending
Brickswest. Is Bram attending? He could talk about making that aluminum
2x4 brick. @8^)
4) Introduction to BrikWars
-rules basics
-organizing games
I had a blast playing BrikWars at last year's event, and I know there's a
general gaming roundtable discussion, but I think a structured session on
introducing the game concepts and rules would be interesting enough to
warrant a separate session -- especially if more sessions are needed. Mike
Rayhawk, will you be attending this year?
5) Introduction to the Pirate Game
Same as above, but different.
6) LUGNET: Past, Present, & Future
I know Todd Lehman is attending because he's on the list of people who need
a place to crash. It would be interesting to hear him talk a bit about how
LUGNET got started, how it operates from an administrative perspective, and
the vision for the future is like.
7) Moonbase Project display / discussion
I know Jon Palmer isn't attending, and I don't know if anyone is organizing
a Moonbase Project display at the Pavillion, but I think this could make for
a good session if there's an attendee who feels they could represent it
well, organize the display, and lead a discussion.
8) Old School LEGO
-history of LEGO
-display of rare old school LEGO elements and sets
Not sure who would be most qualified for this one. I remember last year
seeing some very interesting old LEGO sets on display while eating lunch
inside the LEGOland Park last year, but I'm sure there's somebody out there
who could put on a much more interesting presentation on this subject.
9) LEGO figures
If someone has an example of every scale at which LEGO had made figures
(minifigs, maxifigs, Jack Stone, DUPLO people, Creator figs, Scala figs,
those giant deskmate people, etc), it might be nice to see them all on
display together, maybe get a handout with the comparative dimensions for
each, and have a talk about the history of LEGO figures, and issues of scale.
10) Selling Custom Kits
We had a nice presentation by Daniel Siskind last year, and I was hoping to
see something like this on the schedule again this year. Ideas for
discussion would be: how to design sets that one can produce in quantity,
how best to acquire needed parts, and whether or not such ventures could
ever be profitable.
11) More building techniques
I very much enjoyed the micro-scale presentation last year and the panel on
LEGO sculptures, and greatly look forward to this year's SNOT panel. I
would be interested in more sessions that deal with particular building
techniques and styles.
Those are my ideas off-hand, and I'd invite others to suggest more. Even if
they don't become BrickWest 2003 sessions, they could be done at other
events or maybe at BW 2004. I don't really feel personally qualified to be
a presenter for any of the above session ideas, but I wouldn't rule out
being a presenter if I could think of something I'd be uniquely qualified to
present. I'm thinking I may get something together for 2004, but I'm open
to suggestions for this year.
Hope to hear some good comments,
-The Rev. Brendan Powell Smith
