Todd, the stuff with the motors is Very interesting. A friend has two small motors/generators with cranks that he bought at some expensive educational materials store for about $25 I think. They run small pilot lamps well, and can do the (...) (25 years ago, 29-Oct-99, to lugnet.edu, lugnet.technic)

I know one thing that can ruin a motor.... Never drop it shaft down on the ground, even in dirt. I was carrying it across my yard, and it fell, and now will not work anymore. The shaft was jammed back inside the motor. If your motor will not turn at (...) (25 years ago, 31-Oct-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Stephen, I have had one RIS motor fail shortly after first use, apparently developing a shorted armature winding. Symptom: hard to rotate fast by hand. OK very slow. Under power: ran rough and slow, made humming noise I suspect was once-per-motor (...) (25 years ago, 1-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)

On your web page you ask why they made the commutator so small. I think the most obvious-by-far reason is to reduce the amount of wear on the contacts due to friction. Technic-heads, read this: (...) any seize, but I haven't used them very much either. What I have noticed is that on a few motors, when I turn the shaft slowly by hand, it will bind up unless I apply a lot of torque. It almost feels like there's a (...)
