It is very difficult for someone to make a LoM MOC without owning
many, many LoM sets.

I think this has always been true. What would you build with just a few small
Space, Castle and Pirates sets? How do you combine two grey wing plates, a
horse, a cannon and a palm tree (all of which are pieces which are more-or-less
specific to those themes)? It's just that you've had a lot longer to build up
your Castle collection or your Pirate collection than you've had to build up
your LOM or Harry Potter collection.

That's true, but you need a lot less of the older sets to make something good.
Compare this

with this

Counting inflation in the price, too.
I think the latter has more building possibilities.

I would like to see a Life On Mars (or again, insert your favorite modern
theme here) BASIC set - a large kit of LoM pieces, but not a specific model;
just parts made with that theme in mind (LoM colors, some of the modern LoM
pieces, but mostly 'universal' pieces like plain old plates and bricks).
They could come with an instruction book with 8 - 10 model ideas just like
the old BASIC sets, but that wouldn't really be necessary.

I think we all dream of Theme Tubs like this!

Amen.

I have never actually seen the elusive 'starwars bucket' (I doubt they
actually exist...  ;)

There was a Star Wars Pod Racer bucket http://guide.lugnet.com/set/7159 which
is definitely real (I bought one myself).

There was another one.

(...) Well, so do I, but I think you have to compare like with like! 7315 (LOM) Solar Explorer has 242 pieces, 3 figures and was released in 2001 at US$35.
