Although I am sympathetic to the idea of having more generic 'figs in
sets, I don't really agree that "we never had enough Black Falcons . . .
to man the walls". Looking back, Castle sets over the years have a very
high ratio of 'figs and accessories to bricks. The large TLC castles of
yore were dripping with 'figs---try finding bunk and stable room inside
6080 for it's twelve 'figs and four horses.
Of course, Town and Space were (are) similarly 'fig-to-brick heavy, but
people in those themes could go out and buy buckets of appropriately
colored brick. In Castle, unless you bought set 805[0], you could only
buy LEGOLAND sets brimming with 'figs to get the parts to build those
walls.
Minifigs are very nice, though. . .which might be why I *still* go out and
buy Black Falcons instead of getting the gray bricks I need to make use of
them.
I've never really understood why there are castle accessory packs---I've
always had more than enough weapons and helmets for my 'figs[1], and
thanks to TLC's predilection for horse carts there is an ahistorically
large population of Lego horses (and wheels). Consider a set like
http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/6022-1
which has two 'figs and a horse, and weapons for two more 'figs. You
could build an army with that set, and most of the contemporary sets were
similarly heavy on the accessories.

Wasn't this the idea of the Jabba the Hutt and Hogwarts sets? Not as
transparent as the peg-and-hole system of the '80s, but present.

[0] It never occurred to me to do this when I was in the Demographic.
[1] Of course, I can see having extra equipment if you want to have all
your Castle 'figs similarly equipped[2], want to draft non-Castle 'figs
into Castle, or have lots of soldiers that are wearing crowns.
[2] Like I do. . .

| (...) The problem LOTR, Braveheart and other films is that they are not suitable for Lego, and I don't mean the Lego Company, I'm talking about us. TLC can make Orcs, Cavalry (Riders of Rohan) troops (Gondor, Irish, Scots, English men-at-arms), etc. (...) (21 years ago, 8-Oct-03, to lugnet.castle, FTX)
