This is one of the main reasons I posted asking for opinions. I think I can
fix this, but I know that fixing it is going to be a lot of work. Theres no
point bothering if people arent going to like the results.

That can be fixed (with relatively small effort).

This seems to me to be the main reason to use a ray-tracer in the first place.
If you dont want refraction or reflections, why not use a renderer like LDView?
