  Organizing the Site Revamp

I need to know what areas of this site people will be expecting in the future or can possibly anticipate so I can make all the image links at one time if possible. This is because its a heck of a lot easier than going back and doing a new one like (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp

(...) If you want to do them all at once, you may want to wait until after the content has been decided and worked on and we've got a fairly stable new site. That's probably more productive than doing image-links first. (...) I'm not sure I'm on the (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp

(...) This tactic of registration, just by its intrusive nature, is evil. Not to mention, riddled with about a *ton* of technical details that really shouldn't need to be worked out. LDraw is in a continual state of growth. If anyone *really* wants (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp

(...) Yeah, or major subidrectories. They can be put into: /download/ /gettingstarted (too long/cumbersome?) /tlg/ /links/ /contribute/ /credits/ /memorial/ (...) Probably. (...) Oops <blush> Thanks for the reminder, we can't forget who got us (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: LDraw announcements/updates

(...) For the site discussion, I think a temporary (or permanent if you desire) group name would be most appropriately: lugnet.cad.dev.site, denoting the site for the .dev group.. (...) Whoa! If I had $$ I would probably use that group too.. Keep (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  LDraw announcements/updates

(...) If a separate mailing list were set up for update notifications, then everything would have to be posted to two places (there and here). Another possibility: Simply create .cad.announce or .cad.updates for this purpose. That way anyone could (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: LDraw announcements/updates

(...) Todd, it was a joke. We just moved in here, right? (...) That's an interesting idea. Can people subscribe via e-mail without visiting the web-pages (even if it means they can't post?) (...) But that's because most robotics-heads are subscribed (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp

(...) Right, without permission we can neither modify nor distribute these files. But even with permission, an ARJ-based install should be available. (...) Good point. (...) I disagree with this. Many people (maybe not many people into virtual LEGO, (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Mailing list subscriptions

(...) Sorry! -- I'm humor-impaired sometimes without the aid of smileys. Anyway, it seemed like a legitimate/logical suggestion to me, at least in terms of the bottom line -- a low-bandwidth information-dispersal venue for updates. (...) No, all (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp

(...) Optional, yes. Good point. (...) Which would basically be "download LDRAW.EXE and all the LCAD updates" (...) Using the right Win31 Program Manager API calls would do away with the need for a Win32 install; program folders and icons can be (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) And (potentially) splitmpd, l3p, and ldscript. Any others I'm forgetting? (...) Right, except why include the Win32 programs for people who can't use them? Most of the huge-o programs (LDAO) are 32-bit. It's not a big deal on CD distributions, (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp

(...) + a batch file to run them all in sequence? Just as a minor convenience, I suppose, tho. If there's demand, you could possibly make a linux shell-script to do the same. I don't know - do linux DOS emulators have the ability to run DOS .EXEs, (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) I personally don't use these tools. Thus, I would be unlikely to want to download them if I were surfing via modem. Hmmm... I might be muddling things. My point is this: Let the main archive, parts updates, and separate tools be available (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

DOS Makelist (was Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp))

(...) Umm, that would be really great if you did that. We never came up with a replacement for James' original makelist.exe (which can only handle 1000 parts). How big would a distributable of your Perl-makelist be? And how easy would it be for (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) Just to create some facts & data to work from, I created zip files containing various parts of the whole LDraw family. Here's what I got: Original LDraw and all parts: 2.1MB +DOS tools: 2.3MB +Win32 tools: 4.8MB (not including L3PAO & its (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: DOS Makelist (was Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp))

(...) Why the limitation on 1000 parts? Have all the makelist implementations shelled out to call sort.exe? I'm sure there's a quicksort call in the ANSI C libraries, and stl has some great capabilities for those of the C++ persuasion... (...) Well, (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) I agree. (1) (...) You've done this before, haven't you? Man, what a headache. :-P This is why I don't write the install code at work. I have learned one thing: avoid avoid avoid InstallShield! How do you like the Wise install tool? Would it (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: DOS Makelist (was Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp))

(...) I'd guess the limitation is because James allocated a 1000-element array to hold the data lines. The problem I ran into when I tried a rewrite was I was using a shareware version of Basic, which wouldn't support the memory usage I needed, so I (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) I like Wise very much. I don't *think* I've used InstallShield, maybe I tried once. Anyway, I know I don't want to try it. I've mostly used Wise to package VB apps, but it works really well, and very easily. With the new version, I just point (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) Which DOS tools are these? I don't remember any being particularly large... (...) Same for this... LDAO is 2.something Mb, right? What's the rest? --Bram Bram Lambrecht / o o \ BramL@juno.com ---...---oooo-----(_...o---...--- WWW: (URL) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) It's Ldraw _+_ the dos tools. so the dos tools are 200k (...) same for this - 2.3 meg ldraw 'n' stuff, rest LDAO. Jasper (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

By the way I took a look of what takes that much space in ldao and it happens that it is mostly the vb6 virtual machine and the comctl.ocx. Since those are already correctly installed in the system of all those who used the previous install you (...) (25 years ago, 17-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)

(...) Yep. I'm still (when I have time) playing with this in Wise. Steve (25 years ago, 17-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)
