All he does is move a file to his web folder, and a script runs periodically
(via cron) and finds all ldraw files and catalogs them.

I'm very lazy. ;)

Any interest in a copy of the program that generates my overview file?

I know most authors don't have the ability to run a script like this on their
server.  But I know that some sites are using gallery web apps authored by AFOL.
It would be cool to have such web apps ldraw aware, making it easy for people to
find the ldraw files on a site.

Definitely.

Maybe we should take a few moments to think about how to announce the available
LDraw files on a web site?  Is the NNTP/SMTP header format I use for my overview
file (see <http://lego.jacob-sparre.dk/Byggevejledninger/oversigt.text>)
appropriate?  Or should we rather use a more complex format like RSS?  Is it
obvious how RSS should be used for announcing building instructions?  I prefer a
simpler, customized format (like my own proposal), but I can see the benefit of
using a format which other applications already know.

And if this were added to Brickshelf, that would be uber cool.  And why can't I
already search Brickshelf for ldraw files? I've tried it (just to make this
archive) and the results are very bad, not very useful at all.

I expect that it wouldn't be too hard to make Brickshelf generate an overview of
the available LDraw files.  I think it is just a matter of asking the
maintainers and pointing them to the preferred format of the overview.

It would be cool actually, if any time an ldraw file is added to brickshelf, the
repository is automatically notified and updated...

Or if someone was using a gallery app and they add a file, if the repository is
automatically notified and updated.

That could be done pretty easily.  Just set up an e-mail address for the
repository which only accepts messages formatted as descriptions of LDraw files
(however we decide that format to be).  Then the various publishers of LDraw
files will just have to make their systems send an e-mail to that address
whenever there is a change in their collection of LDraw files.

Anyway, these are all pipe dreams.  I don't have the means to make any of them
reality.  But if I were able to, this is how I would shape it.

I like the ideas.  Especially those about automating as much as possible of the
process.  Any chance we can get the BIP to read the same (format) announcements
of LDraw files?  Then I could update my submissions to BIP and MLDFR in one go -
automatically.

Play well,

Jacob
