Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
I've been looking into the problem of making a model which is narrower than the 8880 Supercar, while still retaining all the cool features, like independent suspension and steering wheel drive. Working with this, I have made a web page with some (...) (26 years ago, 17-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Wouter van Wageningen
(...) Great pictures. While I was building the 8880 I was supprised to find the specialized (non-technic-standard) means of connecting the wheels. Did you find a way to use the suspension with normal technic wheels? ____ |oooo| Cheers, |oooo| Wouter (...) (26 years ago, 17-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) That's probably not possible. There does exist some other steering gears, though, which can accommodate ordinary technic wheels. I'm refering to the steering gears used on the 8865 (URL) fit directly in the blue suspension braces, but you (...) (26 years ago, 18-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Wouter van Wageningen
(...) If I only had those pieces. Or if I had a 8858...... I would love to have some good suspension parts. I was thinking of attempting to use two 8417's to make a nice hotrod. But lack of good (specialized) pieces holds me back. I saw on your site (...) (26 years ago, 18-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) Yes, I modified it. I basically made something which is like the suspension on the Rebel Wrecker, 8858, but with flex cables for steering. The pieces needed to make such a suspension is available today, BTW. You can get the 8437 Future car for (...) (26 years ago, 21-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Wouter van Wageningen
(...) So, you would use the wish-bones (2 per wheel) from the Cyber set, and the piece that connects them and the wheel from the Future car?! (...) No problem, have a nice vacation. ____ |oooo| Cheers, |oooo| Wouter van Wageningen ¯¯¯¯ (26 years ago, 21-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) Yep! That's what I did on the X1/9. I should probably write some more descriptive text under the X1/9, since I've gotten a couple of questions on that one. The 8440 has rigid axles, as you've observed, but it still has the pieces needed to (...) (26 years ago, 23-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Wouter van Wageningen
(...) I take it that the 8437 has the 'Steering gear, type III' from (URL) makes me wonder which set had the type I? (...) Does anyone have one he wants to part with? ;-) (...) Why did they make that specialized piece? It seems to me that the (...) (26 years ago, 23-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) The 8865, as I mentioned earlier in the thread. (...) It probably does, but this is an artifact of the length of the links, not of the rack, right? Anyway, if you had the 8858 or any other set that has the same steering gear (8440, 8437, (...) (26 years ago, 25-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Wouter van Wageningen
(...) That's basically the same as the setup of the 8880, except for the wheels. Does it work well? (...) So why didn't they change the length of the links, instead of making that small rack with ball joints? They could have reused the smaller links (...) (26 years ago, 27-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) I dunno, I haven't got one. Moz should be able to answer that. I suspect that the weight of the body of the 8865 is a tad bit too large for this setup. I'm fearing that the front wheel axles will "twist", making the wheels stand out on the (...) (26 years ago, 27-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Wouter van Wageningen
(...) I thought of that too. Especially now that I have a 8414. The tracks pull the axis back and almost lock up the driveshaft. (...) <snip> (...) occurs strong enough? ____ |oooo| Cheers, |oooo| Wouter van Wageningen ¯¯¯¯ (26 years ago, 27-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) I thought you may find it interesting. :-) (...) Yes, I'd say it is. You'll need to put some more pieces on it, of course. The pictures presented was only meant to get you going. I've used four halfbeams on each side to hold the steering gear, (...) (26 years ago, 27-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Chris Moseley
Fredrik Glöckner wrote in message ... (...) 8865? Yeah, works very well, and better yet has standard axle holes. So you can mount any wheel on them. The only hassle is that you get two in each 8865, so you need to buy tow copies. And it's really (...) (26 years ago, 27-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Just as a note, I have enough of the gears and such from 8437, but would be willing to buy a partial 8437 from folks after they raided one for the parts they needed. MacFrugals had these at 1/2 off for a while. I got 3, sold one off and parted (...) (26 years ago, 23-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fred Carcanague III
Larry... What parts are you looking for from the 8437? I only have 1 but don't nearly all the parts. Fred... There are 4 yellow "A" arms in the 8437. Warning about the flex link w/the ball joints on the end. DO NOT let a 5yr old hold a completed car (...) (26 years ago, 23-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Well I have 2. So I have enough of the specialty steering parts, etc. What I would want would be the 1 and 2 bend round end technic beams and other construction parts. I have plenty of gears and differentials for the kind of building I do (...) (26 years ago, 24-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) Ah, but they're not the kind which can tilt in the end opposite to the ball joint, right? The ones on the 8437 are basically a 2x1 plate with an A-arm and a ball joint? I'm sorry to say that it's probably hard to make independent front (...) (26 years ago, 24-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Larry Pieniazek
(...) This may not be very compact, but mount them on a 2x2 plate with technic pin holes underneath, and you'd get the up/down motion, no? (26 years ago, 24-Dec-98, to lugnet.build)

Re: Tinkering the 8880 suspension setup —Fredrik Glöckner
(...) Yes, this is very true. As you say, it will not be too rigid, but it will most probably work. The problem may be that you'll need even longer steering links, as the distance from the pivot points to the ball joints is farther. But the problem (...)
