So, you would use the wish-bones (2 per wheel) from the Cyber set, and
the piece that connects them and the wheel from the Future car?!

Yep!  That's what I did on the X1/9.  I should probably write some more
descriptive text under the X1/9, since I've gotten a couple of questions
on that one.

The 8440 has rigid axles, as you've observed, but it still has the
pieces needed to make steering wheel independent suspension, that is: 4
black wishbones, or "steering knuckle arm with ball joint", and four
steering gears, out of which two are needed for one suspension axle.
The setup is almost like the one found 8858 (check out the instructions)

     http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=8858-1

except that I've used flex cables for steering links and three small
suspenders for each wheel, and no horizontal suspenders like the ones
found on 8858.  And I haven't got that special rack piece with two ball
joints, so the steering setup I used is pretty much like the one on 8440
(probably the same as 8437).

The price for such a setup is a bit steep today, because you need the
8437 future car for the steering gears and two 8257's for the four
yellow arms.

Oh, and you don't need to use the wheels from the Future Car for such a
setup.  "Any" wheel will do, except that they need to be large enought
for the chassis not to touch the ground.

Please feel free to ask further questions if there's more on your mind.
Or if I'm being incomprehensible

Fredrik
