Perhaps obfuscation.

p.s.  What I want to know is what the props for step #4 is called.  Karim • made
a note that ILM model makers would add tons of little but meaningless details
to all their space ships, bashing hundreds of automobile and rocket models to
add finishing touches to, say, a Star Destroyer.  Is there a word for this?

Clutterfication?  :-)  I remember seeing something (years ago) on TV that • talked
about ILM: a model-maker was being interviewed, and demonstrated how they had
attached bits from battleships and such to the outside of the models.  Up • close,
you could see what he was talking about -- you could see the parts distinctly,
but from even a slight distance, they all sort of blended together into a
technical-looking mismash.

This reminds me of the sculptures of Louise Nevelson:

She took ordinary objects, painted them, and arranged them into works that (by
nature of their arrangement) changed how you saw those objects.

(...) Or maybe just "camouflage," but it's not really disguising something IMHO: more like adding small details for a larger effect. Obfuscation (to me) would be adding bits to a model that make people go "and what the heck is THAT for?" :-) - Mike (24 years ago, 16-Feb-00, to lugnet.build)
