I get most of it from Karim Nassar. He has an excellent description of this
"scuplting" style here:
http://www.etymon.org/kn/tips.html
The most important item (IMO) is #1 -- "Don't get caught up in the 'bumps-up'
way of thinking." There are just too many shapes you can get from ordinary
pieces to ignore this.
The hardest part about this "sculpting" process is trying to reach a point
where it all crystallizes for you. Before this point, you're going "huh?"
But one or two magical models later, and it's clear as day.
Cheers,

p.s. What I want to know is what the props for step #4 is called. Karim made
a note that ILM model makers would add tons of little but meaningless details
to all their space ships, bashing hundreds of automobile and rocket models to
add finishing touches to, say, a Star Destroyer. Is there a word for this?
p.p.s. (Everyone but Barbara close your eyes.) Hi, Sweetie! :-, (Okay, you
can open your eyes now.)
