I am assuming John Neal is completely interested in this:
I have just finished my first 8 wide train car. It is an adaption of Larry
P's custom hopper. I widened it to 8 studs, added 5 plates height to it and
lengthened it quite a bit. I might need to cut down the size of it, but I
don't have anything other than the original car to check my ratios with. I
mainly lengthened it to allow 2 sets of discharge doors on the bottom.
The pictures didn't come out very well, as black is hard to photo with a
digital camera. I will take better ones when I get around to making my Lego
web page this summer.
Here is a picture of my big hopper, followed by Larry's 6 wide version,
followed by Lego's itty bitty blue one.

I also have a close-up of the top of my big hopper showing the two sets of
doors. (The shiny areas are the doors with 1x6 tiles on them) Between the
doors is a 6x6x3 sloped area made of roof bricks.

Finally, I took a pic of the front of the line of hoppers.

It now uses 1x10 plates for the ribs and has 10 on each side. Unfortunately,
it now takes 40 of the stud/pins and technic 1x2 bricks per hopper.
I have now tasted the 8-wide dark side. I am not addicted yet, but I think I
will be once I convert my SantaFe Warbonnet Loco to an 8 wide.

| Bravo, Mike! {:^D You beat me to the punch-- I had intended to build an 8 wide version of Lar's Hopper as well! It looks great! Don't you think the proportions look a lot better? I especially like the way an 8 wide is wider than its trucks-- which (...) (25 years ago, 19-Jan-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.build, lugnet.loc.us.ca.sf)
