If there was an official membership for Lugnet, would anybody that wanted to
use its services have to join? What I mean is that if someone like myself just
wanted to read through the news, would they have to pay and/or become a member?

The idea behind memberships is for unique identities, the main purpose of which is authentication (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jun-99, to lugnet.general, lugnet.admin.general)
